A Degree with Workplace Applications
A recent survey of our alumni found that graduates of our program work in a number of fields that require, or favor, graduate training in communication. Examples include public relations, corporate branding, advertising, corporate reputation management, digital communication management and strategic media management. Some of the job titles held by our graduates include internal communication manager, director of public relations, director of industry communication, corporate communication manager, media relations manager and director of employee communication.

Graduate Program Curriculum
The Nicholson School of Communication currently offers an M.A. in communication with two different areas of concentration (students may take courses from either track as electives):
Students concentrating their study in mass communication specialize primarily in forms of communication related to messages that are intended to reach large audiences via broadcast, electronic and print media. Our program features courses such as Mass Communication Theory, Seminar in New Technology, Theories of Public Relations, Media Effects, Advertising and Society, International Communication and Crisis Communication.
M.A. in Communication Catalog
Students concentrating their study in interpersonal communication specialize in understanding face-to-face communication across a number of contexts and cultures. Our program features courses in Interpersonal Communication, Communication and Conflict, Social Support in the Workplace, Communication in Organizations, Intercultural Communication and Persuasion.

Graduate Certificate in Corporate Communication
The graduate certificate in corporate communication offers students additional training in creating, managing and communicating corporate reputation. Coursework will focus on theory, research and practical applications of principles related to corporate communication. The curriculum includes courses such as Crisis Public Relations, Theories of Public Relations and electives designed to enhance students’ understanding of communication in corporate and other professional organizations. The certificate program does not require the GRE for admission and the program is designed to be completed in one year of full-time study.
Upon completion of the certificate, students have the option to apply for the Communication M.A. degree and transfer their certificate toward the degree.

Apply to the Program
When applying to the graduate program, students should apply online at the Office of Graduate Studies. All supporting documentation (GRE scores, transcripts, letters of recommendation, statement, etc.) should be labeled with the applicant’s legal name and, if available, PID or application number, and sent to:

The Ilmenau University of Technology Institute of Media and Communication Science (IfMK) include the following departments: empirical media research and political communication, media psychology and media design, media management, media studies, public relations and communication of technology, virtual worlds and digital games and communication studies. In addition IfMK is home to the International Research Group on Crisis Communication. NSC’s proposed student exchange agreement with TU Ilmenau is focused on graduate student study and collaborative research opportunities for faculty. NSC’s graduate students have the opportunity to experience a wide range of graduate seminars and supervised research opportunities (in English) at Ilmenau.
Internships Begin Successful Careers
Faculty in the graduate program recognize that internships are key to launching successful careers. To that end, we encourage our students to pursue internships in a wide-variety of fields and offer academic credit for approved internships. Many of our students intern at local organizations and nonprofits. Similarly, independent studies are catalysts to exploring your field in a more personalized manner.
