Special Guest Speaker

August 30 @ 5:30 pm - 7:00 pm

At this meeting we will have a special guest speaker RaĆ¹l Carballo-Rubio.

Title & Abstract:

Flat, curved and granular spacetime: the quest for quantum gravity

The 20th century has witnessed incredible changes in our understanding of space and time. These two concepts, that entered the century as independent entities, were soon fused together to become what we know today as spacetime. The flat spacetime introduced by Minkowski in 1907 was endowed with curvature a decade later, which allowed describing gravity in terms of geometry and sparked a revolution in our understanding of the universe at large. Now, at the beginning of the 21st century, new experiments might be able to probe for the first time the microscopic properties of spacetime, thus providing the missing element to unravel decades of theoretical research. In this talk I will present a friendly introduction to these developments, focusing on the main physical concepts and leaning on analogies whenever possible.
