{"id":4064,"date":"2019-12-09T10:11:01","date_gmt":"2019-12-09T15:11:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sciencescosmaincms.cm.ucf.edu\/anthropology\/?page_id=4064"},"modified":"2025-01-23T13:26:22","modified_gmt":"2025-01-23T18:26:22","slug":"chairs-welcome-archived1","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/anthropology\/about\/chairs-welcome-archived1\/","title":{"rendered":"Chair&#8217;s Welcome &#8211; Archived"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"lead\">Hello and welcome to the Department of Anthropology at the University of Central Florida.\u00a0 The department is currently comprised of 21 core faculty with strengths in cultural anthropology, archaeology, biological anthropology, public and applied anthropology and ongoing high-impact research projects throughout the world.\u00a0 The department seeks to advance anthropological concepts through teaching and research by actively investigating questions of relevance to the modern world.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"ml-3 alignright wp-image-4191 lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 650px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 650\/433;font-size: 1rem\" data-src=\"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/anthropology\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/11\/Class-Photo-6-1-of-1-2-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"650\" height=\"433\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" \/>At the undergraduate level we offer a <a href=\"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/anthropology\/undergraduate\/bachelor-of-arts-degree\/\">BA degree<\/a> that provides a broad holistic understanding of humans and the human condition, both past and present, that emphasizes all disciplinary subfields of anthropology:\u00a0 archaeology, cultural anthropology, linguistics, biological anthropology, and public and applied anthropology. \u00a0Course instruction combines face-to-face interaction in the classroom and lab, web delivery, and field research.\u00a0 At the same time, we also offer a completely <a href=\"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/anthropology\/undergraduate\/online-bachelor-arts-degree\/\">online BA degree<\/a> that has been recognized through several media outlets as a top online program in anthropology.<\/p>\n<p>At the graduate level, we offer a broad-based <a href=\"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/anthropology\/graduate\/master-of-arts-program\/\">MA in Anthropology<\/a> with required and elective coursework primarily focused in cultural anthropology, archaeology, biological anthropology, and public and applied anthropology.\u00a0 Since fall 2018, we offer a <a href=\"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/anthropology\/graduate\/anthropology-ph-d\/\">Ph.D. in Integrative Anthropological Sciences<\/a> that emphasizes cross-disciplinary empirical research on the dynamics of transformation and change in societies past and present.\u00a0The goal of the program is to provide graduates with scientific, technological, and sociocultural skills that are applicable for both academic and applied jobs.<\/p>\n<p>I encourage you to take the time to explore our department website that provides detailed information about our programs, <a href=\"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/anthropology\/people\/\">faculty<\/a>, labs, <a href=\"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/anthropology\/research\/\">research<\/a> and exciting events.\u00a0 Please feel free to contact me or any of the faculty if you have questions about our programs or research.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"h4\">John J.
