{"id":321,"date":"2012-10-26T11:30:27","date_gmt":"2012-10-26T15:30:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/worthy.cos.ucf.edu\/wordpress\/?page_id=321"},"modified":"2012-10-26T11:30:27","modified_gmt":"2012-10-26T15:30:27","slug":"manatee-behavior-and-habitat-utilization-at-warm-water-sites","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/biology\/PEBL\/current-research\/manatee-studies\/manatee-behavior-and-habitat-utilization-at-warm-water-sites\/","title":{"rendered":"Manatee Behavior and Habitat Utilization of Warm Water Sites"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Although manatees have occasionally been reported as far as north as Rhode Island and as far west as Texas during the summer months, their physiology <a href=\"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/biology\/PEBL\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2012\/10\/manatee-aggregation.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-325\" title=\"manatee aggregation\" src=\"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/biology\/PEBL\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2012\/10\/manatee-aggregation-150x131.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"131\" \/><\/a>restricts them to warmer sub-tropical to tropical water temperatures during the cooler winter months.\u00a0 During the winter, manatees generally migrate south to warmer latitudes, but a significant number of individuals may remain north of their historical range, relying on a network of artificial, industrial warm-water effluents and natural, warm-water refugia to survive colder water temperatures.\u00a0\u00a0 With the potential threat of power plant deregulation and the loss of related critical warm-water effluents, the need to identify and qualify additional sources of warm-water refugia not dependent upon industrial outflows has become increasingly important.<\/p>\n<p>Brevard County is home to a substantial proportion of the states\u2019 manatee population with winter synoptic counts indicating that several hundred manatees are using numerous aggregation sites, with the highest proportion of manatees being counted at two power plants in the northern part of the county. Smaller aggregations have also been documented at several smaller less well known sites.\u00a0 While most of the state\u2019s primary warm-water sites have been researched and well-documented, some primary sites and several secondary sites still remain unidentified or are at best, poorly documented particularly in Brevard County.<\/p>\n<p>The goals of this study are to 1)\u00a0 investigate seasonal as well as annual patterns of manatee use of each aggregation site to determine if they serve as winter <a href=\"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/biology\/PEBL\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2012\/10\/berkeley11.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-326\" title=\"berkeley1\" src=\"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/biology\/PEBL\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2012\/10\/berkeley11-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>refugia;\u00a0 2) to establish daily patterns of\u00a0 manatee use; 3) to define\u00a0 the physical and chemical parameters of each site in a manner comparable to studies of other known secondary warm-water sites; 4) to rank these sites in order of importance with respect to usage during critically cold times;\u00a0 5) to\u00a0 predict\u00a0 the sustainability of these sites over time;\u00a0 and 6) to evaluate the current protection (if any) and the possible need for further protection or enhancement of these potentially critical sites.\u00a0 This research is being undertaken by Ann Spellman, Ph.D. candidate in PEBL.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Although manatees have occasionally been reported as far as north as Rhode Island and as far west as Texas during the summer months, their physiology restricts them to warmer sub-tropical to tropical water temperatures during the cooler winter months.\u00a0 During &hellip; <a href=\"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/biology\/PEBL\/current-research\/manatee-studies\/manatee-behavior-and-habitat-utilization-at-warm-water-sites\/\">Continue reading <span class=\"meta-nav\">&rarr;<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":29,"featured_media":0,"parent":311,"menu_order":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","template":"","meta":{"footnotes":""},"class_list":["post-321","page","type-page","status-publish","hentry"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.5 -
