{"id":434,"date":"2012-10-26T13:30:54","date_gmt":"2012-10-26T17:30:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/worthy.cos.ucf.edu\/wordpress\/?page_id=434"},"modified":"2012-10-26T13:30:54","modified_gmt":"2012-10-26T17:30:54","slug":"metabolism-thermoregulation-and-nutrition","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/biology\/PEBL\/current-research\/metabolism-thermoregulation-and-nutrition\/","title":{"rendered":"Metabolism, Thermoregulation, and Nutrition"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #ffffff;font-size: medium\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman\"><a href=\"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/biology\/PEBL\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2012\/10\/header3.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-480\" title=\"header3\" src=\"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/biology\/PEBL\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2012\/10\/header3.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"702\" height=\"137\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/biology\/PEBL\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2012\/10\/header3.png 702w, https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/biology\/PEBL\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2012\/10\/header3-300x59.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 702px) 100vw, 702px\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman\">The\u00a0Mobile Energetics Lab (MEL)\u00a0gives PEBL the unique ability of being able to measure the metabolism and temperature tolerance of marine animals at various facilities around the country.\u00a0 Using MEL we can determine the energetic requirements of sea turtles, seals, sea lions, manatees, or cetaceans where they live at any facility that houses aquatic species.\u00a0 The self-contained system houses a seawater heat exchanger system that we can use to control the water temperature in which the animal is held up to 5000 gallons) to within \u00b11\u00b0C and thereby examine how well the animal can cope with temperature change in its environment.\u00a0 MEL also has lab space to house all of the physiological monitoring tools (gas analyzers, temperature monitors, flow controllers, and computers) that are required to undertake these measurements.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman\">In addition to being able to measure the metabolic rate of animals, PEBL has the specialized equipment required to assess the body condition and insulative capabilities of a variety of species.\u00a0 Using state-of-the-art medical diagnostic ultrasound equipment, like the GE Logiqbook, we can get insights into both the quality and quantity of blubber and ascertain how well an animal can cope with conditions in the wild.\u00a0 This instrumentation could also conceivably be used in medical diagnostics and also for the determination of pregnancy.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman\">Using thermal imaging equipment (FLIR Thermavision P-20) we can assess regions of the body where heat loss is occurring and assess the insulative quality of an animal.\u00a0 This equipment is sensitive enough to determine temperatures of 0.1\u00b0C and gives a clear visualization of the temperatures over an animal\u2019s body.\u00a0 Thermal imaging has been used by our lab to examine areas of heat loss in endangered Steller sea lions at the Vancouver Aquarium in conjunction with a study of the energetics of thermoregulation (photo at right) as well as manatees and killer whales.\u00a0 This approach also has diagnostic capabilities to address areas of inflammation or infection.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The\u00a0Mobile Energetics Lab (MEL)\u00a0gives PEBL the unique ability of being able to measure the metabolism and temperature tolerance of marine animals at various facilities around the country.\u00a0 Using MEL we can determine the energetic requirements of sea turtles, seals, sea &hellip;
