{"id":605,"date":"2012-10-29T12:08:35","date_gmt":"2012-10-29T16:08:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/worthy.cos.ucf.edu\/wordpress\/?page_id=605"},"modified":"2016-10-26T11:08:39","modified_gmt":"2016-10-26T15:08:39","slug":"deepwater-horizon-oil-spill-dolphins-in-the-western-florida-panhandle","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/biology\/PEBL\/current-research\/deepwater-horizon-oil-spill-dolphins-in-the-western-florida-panhandle\/","title":{"rendered":"Projects in the Florida Panhandle"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">Bottlenose dolphins (<em>Tursiops truncatus<\/em><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">) are provisionally assigned to 33 distinct stocks in the northern Gulf of Mexico<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman\"><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">These stocks are based upon descriptions of relatively discrete \u201ccommunities\u201d of dolphins and Pensacola Bay and Choctawhatchee Bay are considered to harbor separate stocks for the purpose of management under the Marine Mammal Protection Act<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman\"><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">Bottlenose dolphins in the western Florida Panhandle (Choctawhatchee Bay to Pensacola Bay) have been studied since 2006 through the joint efforts of the Physiological Ecology and Bioenergetics Lab, UCF and the Sarasota Dolphin Research Program.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">In 2010 this area was exposed to oil from the Deepwater Horizon oil spill prompting concerns about potential short- and long-term impacts on local dolphin populations, including trophic web disruption.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">\u00a0 Our projects are exploring <a title=\"Potential Impacts of the BP Oil Spill on Estuarine Dolphins in the Florida Panhandle\" href=\"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/biology\/PEBL\/?page_id=607\">bottlenose dolphins<\/a> and fish ecology in the region to determine any potential impacts.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman;font-size: medium\">Choctawhatchee Bay is a series of complex habitats that are strongly influenced by freshwater input and salinity stratification<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman\"><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\"> with East Choctawhatchee\u00a0Bay receiving a large volume of freshwater from the Choctawhatchee River.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">Santa Rosa Sound is a priority conservation area for sturgeon and seagrass and is classified as \u201cOutstanding Florida Water\u201d by the Environmental Regulation Commission because of its natural attributes.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">The PB system includes five interconnected estuarine components, including Santa Rosa Sound<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman\"><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">Most recently the Pensacola Bay region was exposed directly to oil from the Deep Water Horizon oil spill during summer 2010 and indeed oil continues to be seen in the region.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) are provisionally assigned to 33 distinct stocks in the northern Gulf of Mexico.\u00a0 These stocks are based upon descriptions of relatively discrete \u201ccommunities\u201d of dolphins and Pensacola Bay and Choctawhatchee Bay are considered to harbor separate &hellip;
