It is\u00a0strongly\u00a0recommended that potential students read &#8220;<em>Before you apply<\/em>&#8221; below, as it contains crucial information.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2 class=\"heading-underline\">Before you Apply<\/h2>\n<h5>1-2\u00a0Years\u00a0Before\u00a0You\u00a0Apply:<\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li>\t\t\t<span class=\"badge badge-primary\"\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t>\n\t\t\t\tGain\u00a0some\u00a0research\u00a0experience\t\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t as an undergraduate student \u2013 not only for a letter of reference from your supervisor, but because you should be able to answer \u201cYes!\u201d when you ask yourself \u201cDo I want to spend the next few years doing research?\u201d\u00a0 Having done it, you\u2019ll have a better-informed answer.\u00a0 Alternatively, gain some on-the-job or volunteer experience after you graduate.<\/li>\n<li>\t\t\t<span class=\"badge badge-primary\"\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t>\n\t\t\t\tEarn\u00a0at\u00a0least\u00a0a\u00a03.0\t\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t (of a possible 4.0) grade point average overall and in your last 60 credit hours in a degree program similar to the B.S. in Biology at UCF.\u00a0 If your degree was in a different discipline, then you should have core Biology courses on your transcripts (e.g., Cell Biology, Genetics, Ecology, Evolution).<\/li>\n<li>\t\t\t<span class=\"badge badge-primary\"\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t>\n\t\t\t\tBe\u00a0able\u00a0to\u00a0obtain\u00a0three\u00a0strong\u00a0letters\u00a0of\u00a0reference\t\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t that can attest to your potential to excel as a graduate student, maturity, and ability to work well with others.\u00a0 Two of these letters should be written by people who have directly observed your work as a student, preferably while involved in research activities.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5>Within\u00a01\u00a0Year\u00a0Before\u00a0You\u00a0Apply:<\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li>Decide if you are interested in a Ph.D., or Master\u2019s (thesis) degree:\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Ph.D. in Integrative and Conservation Biology<\/strong>\u00a0is best for students who are committed to a research-oriented career and who have some prior research experience (e.g., active research as an undergraduate, a M.S. thesis, etc.).\u00a0 This is the most selective of our graduate programs as it requires the most qualifications and openings are limited.\u00a0 The department supports Ph.D.\u00a0 students with assistantships, tuition waivers, and health insurance.<\/li>\n<li><strong>M.S. <\/strong>This degree prepares students for a career in science \u2013 conducting research, critically evaluating and analyzing data, and the publication and presentation of scientific results. It also prepares students well for a Ph.D.\u00a0 This degree is best for students with a Bachelor\u2019s degree who want to conduct research but have relatively little research experience.\u00a0\u00a0The department supports MS students with assistantships, tuition waivers, and health insurance.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>For the M.S. or the Ph.D., your research will be supervised by an advisor, and therefore you must match your interests to those of a potential advisor and obtain a commitment in advance from that advisor. Start by checking their interests on the Biology website, reading their publications, then send a formal letter of introduction (e.g. an email) and a resume or curriculum vitae, and follow-up with email, phone calls, and ideally a campus visit (note, only faculty with the titles of Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, and Professor can serve as a research advisor).\u00a0 If possible, take the time to get to know your potential advisor and graduate students \u2013 you will be working with them for several years.\u00a0 When you apply, you should be able to answer these questions:\n<ul>\n<li>Do you wish to conduct research related to that already published by this advisor?<\/li>\n<li>What skills \/ advantages do you bring to the advisor\u2019s lab?<\/li>\n<li>Will you get along with the advisor?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It is vital for your application that a faculty member wants you to join their lab, otherwise, you will be not considered for a M.S. thesis track or Ph.D.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2 class=\"heading-underline\">As You Apply<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Make sure that all the parts of your application are together.
