Abstract: Selenium is a metalloid that has, over the past century, been viewed as both a toxic element and a critical nutrient, and both interpretations are correct. In this seminar we will discuss the discovery of selenium, the study of selenium in the environment and its potential for toxicity, as well as the use of selenium in eukaryotes as a vital active site metalloid. The discovery of the use of selenium in biological systems and its unusual incorporation into proteins, as well as its role in a pathogen, Clostridium difficile, will be the focus of the basic science of this Science Café.
