Pesticide breakdown and interactive products and the effects of population growth on previously undisturbed environments.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"h3\">Purifying mercury-polluted water<\/p>\n<p>Using tiny pieces of gold and the properties of light, scientists can now quickly and inexpensively detect even trace amounts of the pollutant. In the near future, this process can be used to create water filters and reclaim contaminated water.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"h3\">Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB) Removal<\/p>\n<p>From 1920-1970, PCBs were used to manufacture numerous items. In the 1970&#8217;s, PCBs were linked to environmental and medical problems and were discontinued. Today&#8217;s challenge is to safely remove them from the environment.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"h3\">Bioremediation<\/p>\n<p>Remediation of contaminants in soils, sediments, groundwater, and surface water through the enzymatic activities of microorganisms.
