“The Necessity Of Space-Based Monitoring Of Cultural Heritage Destruction In Syria And Iraq”<\/p>\n
Summary<\/strong>
\nThe ongoing conflict in Syria and Iraq has led to the widespread destruction of cultural heritage sites throughout the country.\u00a0 This destruction has taken place both as a direct result of the conflict and through practices of intentional destruction enabled by the conflict.\u00a0 The alarming scale and rate of this destruction requires an international response that incorporates space-based technologies for monitoring the destruction.\u00a0 This seminar will introduce the ASOR Cultural Heritage Initiatives Project, a collaboration between the American Schools of Oriental Research and the US Department of State, and discuss in more depth the monitoring portions of the project.\u00a0 It will also discussed lessons learned within the current conflict and suggest changes that can be made for monitoring cultural heritage impacts in future conflicts.<\/p>\n
