News: Our Central Florida Math Circle was awarded the Dolciani Mathematics Enrichment Grant <\/a>from the Mathematical Association of America<\/a>. This grant enables us to collaborate on program improvement with Orange County Public School teachers Dr. Julia Keith who obtained their Doctor of Education degrees (EdD) from the Noyce program at UCF<\/a> in 2024.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n Our Math Circle has been awarded the Dolciani Grant from the MAA for the third time. This final award will allow Dr. Kwon to complete the program revisions in collaboration with Dr. Julia Keith (OCPS). We will return in January 2027 with enhanced programs. <\/p>\n \t<\/div>\n\n\t\t\n\t

The Central Florida Math Circle is an effort of the Department of Mathematics<\/a> at the University of Central Florida<\/a> to offer the middle school students of the Central Florida region an opportunity to have fun with mathematics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Math Circle is not directed towards a particular curriculum; it is not a class, a lecture or a tutorial. It is a directed experience in the encouragement of student discovery of mathematics. We are happy to be part of a national effort \u201cThe National Association of Math Circles<\/a>\u201d to encourage and develop mathematical insight in students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our Sessions<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

All sessions are guided by math faculties, regional teachers, educators, and graduate and undergraduate students at the University of Central Florida. Each session consists of two parts. In the first part of each session (2:00 pm \u2013 3:30 pm), faculty members will give talks on the intriguing topics of mathematics or lead mathematical explorations. In the second part of each session (3:30 pm \u2013 4:30 pm), students will be engaged in problem-solving and discussion activities with the curriculum-related enrichment topics which will sharpen their understanding of the curriculum-related materials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Group 1(Grade 6 Math-Grade 6 Accelerated Math-Grade 7 Math) and Group 2(Grade 7 Accelerated Math – Grade 8 Math- Pre-Algebra) will be led by UCF undergraduate and graduate students, Mr. Athanasios Dimitriadis (Graduate Student), Mr. Jose Huaman (Graduate Student), Ms. Chanda Obregon (Undergraduate Student), Mr. Coen Ross (Undergraduate Student, Past Math Circle Participant in 2018 and 2019), Ms.Jadyn Jessen (Undergraduate Student, Past Math Circle Participant).
Group 3(Algebra 1-Geometry) will be led by three UCF faculty: Dr. Alexander Tovbis, Dr. Monica Selva Soto, and Dr. Joseph Brennan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

All sessions will be held on Saturdays, 2:00 pm-4: 30 pm, in the Mathematical Sciences Building <\/a>on the UCF campus. The locations will be announced later.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

and Mrs. Sabrina Robinson (OCPS)<\/td>		Prove It! Understanding the Role of Mathematical Reasoning Across Grade Levels<\/em>
Session Description:
<\/strong>Mathematical proofs are more than exercises in logic\u2014they are the foundation of how we know what\u2019s true and accurate in the field of mathematics. This session will guide students through the evolving role of proofs from middle school to high-school mathematics. We will explore how early reasoning skills, such as noticing patterns and explaining \u201cwhy,\u201d grow into formal proofs in geometry, algebra, and beyond. Through engaging examples and grade-level mathematics, students will see how proofs help build deeper understanding, support clear communication, and develop problem-solving skills that extend far outside the math classroom. By the end of the session, students will understand not only what<\/em> proofs are, but why<\/em> they matter in every stage of their mathematical journey.

Title: X-rays and inverse problems

Abstract:
In this talk we look into a discrete x-ray transform that models how x-rays measure absorption through different objects. We explain how these measurements can be used to recover unknown material properties, highlighting the concept of an inverse problem. We conclude with a short discussion on inverse problems.<\/td><\/tr>
3<\/td>February 14<\/td>Dr. Gerrit Welper (UCF)<\/td>Title: From images to artificial intelligence

Abstract:
In this talk, we consider mathematical problems for images. At first, we discuss how they are represented on a computer and how they can be manipulated by convolution, with examples from denoising and edge detection. We will then see how such techniques are used in artificial intelligence, first for the classification of images and later for the generation of images.<\/td><\/tr>

Abstract: Ramsey theory dates back to the early 1930s, and still intrigues many who study combinatorics even today. Roughly put, it makes the profound assertion that complete disorder is impossible. In this talk, we will present a rigorous introduction of Ramsey theory.<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n
