{"id":10340,"date":"2014-07-29T16:15:46","date_gmt":"2014-07-29T20:15:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.cos.ucf.edu\/?p=10340"},"modified":"2017-01-17T17:18:44","modified_gmt":"2017-01-17T22:18:44","slug":"on-your-mark-get-set-tour-de-turtles","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/on-your-mark-get-set-tour-de-turtles\/","title":{"rendered":"On Your Mark, Get Set&#8230;&#8230;.Tour de Turtles!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=wlXdwAREWAc<\/p>\n<p>One, two, three&#8230;&#8230;.they&#8217;re off!\u00a0 Turtles, scooting at high speed (for a loggerhead turtle), swept\u00a0across the beach on their way to the ocean in the 7th Annual Tour de Turtles this past Sunday.\u00a0 Hundreds of spectators and fans came out to enjoy this year&#8217;s race which\u00a0took\u00a0place at the Barrier Island Center in Melbourne Beach on Sunday, July 27.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_10349\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2014\/07\/Melba-e1406664259611.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10349\" class=\"wp-image-10349 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2014\/07\/Melba-e1406664259611.jpg\" alt=\"Melba makes her way to the Atlantic Ocean\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2014\/07\/Melba-e1406664259611.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2014\/07\/Melba-e1406664259611-299x224.jpg 299w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-10349\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Melba makes her way to the Atlantic Ocean (Photo: Craig Rubadoux, FLORIDA TODAY 7\/27)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Shelley was released first, showing off her satellite transmitter that will track her every move so scientists can study the nomadic habits of the Loggerhead turtle species.\u00a0 A short while later, Melba, a much larger female loggerhead with a 42 inch long shell, brought cheers from the crowd as she sped her way into the sea.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2014\/07\/Spectators-e1406664203176.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-10356 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2014\/07\/Spectators-e1406664203176.jpg\" alt=\"Spectators\" width=\"150\" height=\"113\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">In past years, \u00a0some of the competitors have taken a leisurely stroll down the beach.\u00a0 This year was different&#8230;&#8230;the turtles were on a mission.\u00a0 In all, the Tour de Turtles included nine other\u00a0transmitter-outfitted turtles this year.\u00a0 As the rules go, the turtle that swims\u00a0the farthest in three months is declared the winner, and fans can track the turtles&#8217; travels online.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;That&#8217;s about as fast as a loggerhead can move on land,&#8221; Sea Turtle Conservancy (STC)\u00a0Executive Director David Godfrey remarked to the crowd via bullhorn.<\/p>\n<p>The Tour de Turtles generated publicity for STC &#8211; University of Central Florida scientific study of the nomadic habits of loggerhead, green, leatherback and hawksbill turtles.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re looking for migration routes. Because they nest here in Central Florida, but they feed somewhere else. They don&#8217;t eat here while they&#8217;re nesting, so they travel hundreds, thousands of miles to a feeding area,&#8221; said Dan Evans, a STC technology specialist who boasts 14 years of turtle satellite-tracking experience.<\/p>\n<div id=\"module-position-NYvNtvhn-xI\" class=\"story-asset gallery-asset\">\n<div class=\"caption gallery-viewport-caption \">&#8220;Every year, we discover something new. They go someplace different or unexpected.
