\"_MG_5472\"<\/a>The College of Sciences Distinguished Speaker Series\u00a0<\/a>started off with a record crowd this week. \u00a0The first talk took place Tuesday night in front of a packed house. The event was hosted in a new location off campus. Located in downtown Winter Park, Cocina 214<\/a> is a cozy Mexican and Tex-Mex style restaurant and bar that serves as an enjoyable location for these talks. Among the audience were UCF community partners, faculty, staff, students and Alumni.<\/p>\n

\"Cocina<\/a><\/p>\n

Guests were able to enjoy food and drinks as Dr. James Alan Fox gave his presentation. The title of his presentation was mass shootings in America: Active shooters, workplace avengers, family annihilators, and schoolyard snipers. Dr. Fox spoke about how such events are more methodical and planned out than imagined. He focused on the fact that Increasing our understanding of these events can help begin to minimize the violence. He also discussed which currently enacted policies will most likely be successful and which are less likely to be effective because they\u2019re based on faulty reasoning.<\/p>\n

The evening ended with the Dean of the College of Sciences, Michael Johnson, thanking Dr. Fox for traveling to Orlando and sharing his presentation with the community.<\/p>\n

About the Speaker<\/span><\/p>\n

At Northeastern University in Boston, Fox is The Lipman Family Professor of Criminology, Law and Public Policy.
\nHe has written 18 books and published dozens of journal and magazine articles primarily on multiple murder, youth crime, school and campus violence, workplace violence and capital punishment. But, he didn\u2019t stop there. Fox has also published over 200 op-ed columns in newspapers across the nation. As a member of its Board of Contributors, Fox regularly writes for USA Today and has blogged on \u201cCrime and Punishment\u201d for the Boston Globe in the past. He was also profiled in a two-part cover story in USA Today, which described him as \u201carguably the nation\u2019s foremost criminologist,\u201d in feature stories in the New York Times and the Scientific American, as well as in other media outlets.<\/p>\n
