Several experiments on the flight will include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Physics professor <a href=\"http:\/\/physics.cos.ucf.edu\/people\/colwell-joshua\/\">Joshua Colwell\u2019s <\/a>research to explore low-energy collisions of dust particles to better understand the conditions that lead to the formation of the building blocks of planets.<\/li>\n<li>Engineering alumnus <a class=\"external\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/pegasus\/jason-dunn-3d-printing-international-space-station\/\" target=\"_blank\">Jason Dunn\u2019s 3-D printer<\/a> that was developed for space. Dunn\u2019s vision for the printer is to produce whatever is needed for space operations in space via the printer.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Colwell\u2019s experiment in a six-inch-square box will look at slow-speed collisions of dust, which aren\u2019t possible to create in Earth\u2019s gravity. The results of the low-energy collisions will be used to help understand the processes in action in the protoplanetary disk, the disk of dust and gas that surrounds the center of our solar system. The test will lay the groundwork for experimenting with larger particles.<\/p>\n<p>Colwell, who is also assistant director of the <a class=\"external\" href=\"https:\/\/fsi.ucf.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\">Florida Space Institute<\/a>, studies the origin of the solar system, including the early stages of planets, Saturn\u2019s rings, and the evolution of comets and asteroids.<\/p>\n<p>His experiment was chosen two years ago. The project is sponsored by Space Florida, which is Florida\u2019s spaceport authority and aerospace development organization, and NanoRacks, a private company that operates the first commercial laboratory in low-earth orbit. Colwell, the primary investigator on the project, will be out of town and won\u2019t be able to witness the launch, but members of his team \u2013Addie Dove, Julie Brisset and some students \u2013 will be on hand when the experiment lifts off.<\/p>\n<p>Dunn\u2019s experimental 3-D printer in space would cut down on resupply missions and would be the first time something is manufactured off the planet, which is a necessary step toward multi-planetary colonization.<\/p>\n<p>The printer could make replacement parts and other items needed, reducing the need for hauling expensive parts and materials aboard spacecraft.<\/p>\n<p>The aerospace engineer (\u201907, \u201809) interned at <a class=\"external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.kennedyspacecenter.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Kennedy Space Center<\/a> and co-founded the company Made in Space, which is now based in NASA Ames Research Park at Moffett Field, Calif.<\/p>\n<p>Both experiments were selected as part of <a class=\"external\" href=\"https:\/\/flightopportunities.nasa.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">NASA\u2019s Flight Opportunities Program<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Two payloads on last Saturday morning\u2019s SpaceX-4 launch at Cape Kennedy\u00a0had UCF ties.
