Any budget decision can prove to be a challenge, especially\u00a0with the Federal Budget.\u00a0 The Lou Frey Institute of Politics & Government <\/a>at UCF recently hosted their Fall 2014\u00a0Symposium <\/a>to help high school students examine the\u00a0issues that the President’s Budget Supercommittee could not solve.<\/p>\n

The event took place on Monday, September 29 at the UCF Alumni Center\u00a0and\u00a0was their 24th Symposium to date.\u00a0\u00a0Local high school students attended to learn about the challenges of balancing the federal budget and the necessary information and background to understand the budget process.<\/p>\n

Michael Johnson<\/a>, Dean of the College of Sciences, and Congressman Lou Frey, Jr<\/a>., kicked off the event with a welcome and introductory remarks.\u00a0 In attendance were students from Spruce Creek High School, Satellite High School and Trinity Preparatory High School.<\/p>\n

\"Lou<\/a><\/p>\n

Five\u00a0former congressmen were in attendance, including Congressman Lou Frey, Jr., to engage these local high school students in our budget process.\u00a0 Congressman Lou Frey, Jr. led a panel discussion with\u00a0 Reverend John Allen Newman and former Congressmen:<\/p>\n

\nCongressman Jason Altmire (D-PA, 2007-2013)
\nCongressman Allen Boyd (D-FL, 1997-2011)
\nCongressman Cliff Stearns (R-FL, 1989-2013)
\nCongressman Tom Tauke (R-IA, 1979-1991)<\/p>\n

A highlight of the symposium was the budget simulation, led by Chase Hagaman, New England Regional Director, The Concord Coalition<\/a>; Marc Goldwein, Senior Policy Director, The Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget; the above mentioned former congressmen and the Reverend John Allen Newman.<\/p>\n

\"Lou<\/a><\/p>\n

The students worked in teams and some friendly competition\u00a0evolved.\u00a0 Which team\u00a0would be able to\u00a0balance the budget most effectively?<\/p>\n

They were given\u00a0a workbook\u00a0containing principles and priorities to consider in the budget.\u00a0 Some considerations included how their decisions would affect the economy, affect public policy, and how the public would respond to their decisions.<\/p>\n

After discussing these, they worked through an exercise to choose the options to include in their budget.\u00a0 The options included\u00a0items such as:\u00a0creating of a universal pre-k program, developing a national infrastructure to support road improvement, funding for the national institute of health, eliminating human space exploration, and more.<\/p>\n

Applause rang out in the room\u00a0for the winning\u00a0team in the budget simulation.\u00a0 The team\u00a0from Satellite High School was able to cut the budget by more than $3.5T!<\/p>\n

The Symposium was a huge success and the students all learned a great deal about the budgeting process and the decisions that go into this process.<\/p>\n

The Lou Frey Institute of Politics\u00a0& Government at UCF\u00a0promotes the development of enlightened, responsible, and actively engaged citizens.\u00a0 The Institute works to accomplish its mission\u00a0through civic education programs, experiential learning programs, research, policy analysis and advocacy<\/p>\n
