{"id":11346,"date":"2014-12-05T13:27:13","date_gmt":"2014-12-05T18:27:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.cos.ucf.edu\/?p=11346"},"modified":"2014-12-05T13:27:13","modified_gmt":"2014-12-05T18:27:13","slug":"new-patent-help-neurological-disorders","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/new-patent-help-neurological-disorders\/","title":{"rendered":"New Patent to Help Neurological Disorders"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_11349\" style=\"width: 227px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2014\/12\/Dr-Gilson.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11349\" class=\"wp-image-11349 \" src=\"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2014\/12\/Dr-Gilson.png\" alt=\"psychology, patent\" width=\"217\" height=\"207\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-11349\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dr. Richard Gilson<\/p><\/div>\n<p>University of Central Florida Professor Emeritus <a href=\"http:\/\/psychology.cos.ucf.edu\/people\/gilson-richard\/\">Richard Gilson <\/a>recently earned a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uspto.gov\/\">United States patent<\/a> for an invention that will help patients suffering from neurological conditions, including Parkinson\u2019s disease, Essential Tremor, Tourette\u2019s syndrome, Epilepsy, and mood disorders among others.<\/p>\n<p>The invention aids a well-established therapy called deep-brain simulation (DBS). A surgeon inserts electrodes in certain parts of the brain. The electrodes then send signals that help block symptoms of these diseases, such as tremors, other unwanted movement and gestures, seizures, postural instability, depression, etc.<\/p>\n<p>Deep-brain stimulation has been an FDA approved method of treatment for more than a decade, but it comes with many challenges. Challenges include how to pinpoint the exact position of the electrodes and how to broadcast the electromagnetic signals most effectively. Placement of the electrodes is another challenge, as the exact location of symptom-reducing neurons varies from person to person.\u00a0 The location of the targeted neurons also varies based on the disorder and the electrodes may move over time.<\/p>\n<p>Currently, doctors use the electrodes like a garden hose spray to hit small areas of the brain. Unfortunately, it affects not only targeted cells, but also non-targeted areas producing unwanted side effects. With this new invention, physicians will be able to sharpen and strengthen the electronic signals towards intended neurons post-operatively, without the need for additional surgery.<\/p>\n<p>For Dr. Gilson the invention isn\u2019t just a breakthrough, it holds the potential for not only changing the lives of many, but his own life as well. \u00a0He was diagnosed with Parkinson\u2019s disease in 2003 and intimately knows the devastating impact symptoms can have on daily living.<\/p>\n<p>Gilson underwent surgery to insert electrodes in his brain about eight years ago. They are battery operated and he says that when signals are active, he is almost symptom free and can work normally. When the electrodes aren\u2019t active, he says he simply can\u2019t work. \u201cWith the electrodes \u2018on\u2019, they close the door on the symptoms of Parkinson\u2019s and other neurological disorders,\u201d Gilson said. \u201cYou can see the difference almost instantaneously. It is jaw-dropping.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He uses his personal experience to help his research and teaching as a neuroscientist, studying brain and behavior. \u201cIf someone is going to have to be afflicted with Parkinson\u2019s, it should be me.\u201d he said. \u201cSince I already work in this field of research, I can use all my knowledge to help make a difference for those afflicted with Parkinson\u2019s and other neurological disorders.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gilson, who retired from the <a href=\"http:\/\/psychology.cos.ucf.edu\/\">psychology department<\/a>\u00a0in 2011, and a team of experts at UCF, created the idea for the device in 2012. Others on the team include\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nursing.ucf.edu\/research\/bios\/welch\">Dr. Greg Welch<\/a>, the Florida Hospital Endowed Chair in Healthcare Simulation in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nursing.ucf.edu\/\">University of Central Florida College of Nursing<\/a>\u00a0and respected Orlando neurosurgeon <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nizamrazackmdjd.com\/\">Dr. Nizam Razack<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It is important to note that DBS is not a cure, but a procedure to help patients with neurological disorders function normally on a daily basis.\u00a0 A great deal of additional research is being conducted in hopes to find a cure for these disorders and Dr. Gilson remains extremely optimistic.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Gilson is a top scholar in Human Factors Psychology and a nationally known researcher.\u00a0 He has secured, directly or indirectly, millions of dollars in funding for research.\u00a0 He is published widely and has supervised more than 25 dissertations.
