{"id":11590,"date":"2015-02-04T11:11:28","date_gmt":"2015-02-04T16:11:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.cos.ucf.edu\/?p=11590"},"modified":"2024-08-16T09:42:02","modified_gmt":"2024-08-16T13:42:02","slug":"inaugural-stem-day-reached-thousands","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/inaugural-stem-day-reached-thousands\/","title":{"rendered":"Inaugural STEM Day Reached Thousands"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2015\/02\/DSC_2858.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"  aligncenter wp-image-11593\" src=\"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2015\/02\/DSC_2858-1024x684.jpg\" alt=\"DSC_2858\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2015\/02\/DSC_2858-1024x684.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2015\/02\/DSC_2858-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2015\/02\/DSC_2858-768x513.jpg 768w, https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2015\/02\/DSC_2858-299x200.jpg 299w, https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2015\/02\/DSC_2858.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Friday morning, January 30, thousands of K-12 students from the Central Florida area spilled on to UCF\u2019s campus for the inaugural STEM day.\u00a0 STEM day is a bi-annual outreach event for K-12 students interested in learning more about the study of science, technology, engineering and mathematics.<\/p>\n<p>Coordinated by the Center for Initiatives in STEM (iSTEM), \u00a0many colleges and departments across the university were involved in the planning of the day and the demonstrations that took place on campus.\u00a0 Participating departments and academic areas from the College of Sciences included\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/arboretum.ucf.edu\/\">arboretum<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/biology.cos.ucf.edu\/\">biology department<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/chemistry.cos.ucf.edu\/\">chemistry department<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/ncfs.ucf.edu\/\">National Center for Forensic Science<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/communication.cos.ucf.edu\/\">Nicholson School of Communication<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/politicalscience.cos.ucf.edu\/\">political science department<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/physics.cos.ucf.edu\/\">physics department<\/a>, and the <a href=\"http:\/\/sociology.cos.ucf.edu\/\">sociology department<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/stem.cos.ucf.edu\/k-12-stem-outreach\/stem-day\/presenters\/\">Click here for a link to our full participants list.<\/a>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The university hosted the young students in an effort to boost interest in the STEM fields. There were presenters, hands-on activities, exhibits and demonstrations offered around campus in which groups could choose to participate.\u00a0They were given a hands on experience at many of the stations including a dry ice demo, \u201ctie-dying\u201d milk and flying a plane with their brain.\u00a0Milling around the Engineering II atrium, hundreds of students stopped by tables with 3D printers, prosthetic hands and stethoscopes.<\/p>\n<p>Taking a walk outside, a crowd formed around a display in the lawn of the Mathematical Sciences building. Two men were in between a bed of nails topped with a cinder block, and a man in a top hat was holding a sledge hammer. Met with a mix of fear and excitement, he asked whether or not the students thought the men would get hurt.<\/p>\n<p>Showing them the significance of evenly distributed weight, the cinder block was broken and then two men emerged unharmed. By the end of the showcase every student was chanting \u201cthe power of math and science\u201d as they walked to see the next exciting display.<\/p>\n<p>The political science department\u00a0held a unique tug of war demonstration entitled &#8220;Balance of Power Tug of War&#8221; to demonstrate theories of the balance of power\u00a0in international relations.\u00a0 One of the oldest theories, realism, argues that the number of great powers strongly affects dynamics of international relations, particularly their choices about whom they will ally with <a href=\"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2015\/02\/STEM-day-political-Science.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-11669\" src=\"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2015\/02\/STEM-day-political-Science.jpg\" alt=\"STEM day political Science\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><\/a>and their willingness to betray alliance partners.\u00a0 In this activity, participants had an opportunity to test these propositions on a much smaller scale\u2014using an (up to) 4-way tug of war set.\u00a0 After several \u2018test\u2019 runs that vary the conditions of the game, participants and faculty discussed what happened and how it may\u2014or may not\u2014reflect what happens in international relations.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2015\/02\/DSC_2889-e1423066187748.jpg\"><br \/>\n<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2015\/02\/DSC_2889-e1423066187748.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"  aligncenter wp-image-11594\" src=\"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2015\/02\/DSC_2889-e1423066187748-300x257.jpg\" alt=\"Knightro\" width=\"300\" height=\"257\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2015\/02\/DSC_2889-e1423066187748-300x257.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2015\/02\/DSC_2889-e1423066187748-768x657.jpg 768w, https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2015\/02\/DSC_2889-e1423066187748-1024x876.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2015\/02\/DSC_2889-e1423066187748-299x256.jpg 299w, https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2015\/02\/DSC_2889-e1423066187748.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>At the end of the day, Knightro greeted groups of students at Memory Mall for a demonstration on the \u201cphysics of football.\u201d\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.orlandosentinel.com\/features\/education\/os-ucf-stem-fair-20150130-story.html\">Click on this link for a video on this demonstration as posted b<\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.orlandosentinel.com\/features\/education\/os-ucf-stem-fair-20150130-story.html\">y the Orlando Sentinel.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Jeff Bindell, Physics lecturer, and William Kaden, Assistant Professor of Physics, along with two UCF football players, showed the enthralled crowd why a football is shaped the way it is and how airflow affects it.\u00a0 This was of special interest since Super Bowl weekend was upon us.<\/p>\n<p>Special guests included Senator Bill Nelson, Dr Joan Ferrini-Mundy, Assistant Director of the National Science Foundation for Education and Human Resources, and UCF President John Hitt.<\/p>\n<p>As the day came to an end, Knightro waved goodbye, looking forward to the UCF&#8217;s next STEM day.<\/p>\n<div style=\"padding-bottom: 76%;height: 0;overflow: hidden\"><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Friday morning, January 30, thousands of K-12 students from the Central Florida area spilled on to UCF\u2019s campus for the inaugural STEM day.\u00a0 STEM day is a bi-annual outreach event for K-12 students interested in learning more about the study of science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
