{"id":11598,"date":"2015-02-06T13:01:16","date_gmt":"2015-02-06T18:01:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.cos.ucf.edu\/?p=11598"},"modified":"2016-12-01T13:08:25","modified_gmt":"2016-12-01T18:08:25","slug":"bringing-stem-young-future-scientists","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/bringing-stem-young-future-scientists\/","title":{"rendered":"Bringing STEM to Young Future-Scientists"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Calibri\"><a href=\"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2015\/02\/Jeff-and-other-in-front-3501.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-medium wp-image-11607 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2015\/02\/Jeff-and-other-in-front-3501-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Jeff and other in front 350\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2015\/02\/Jeff-and-other-in-front-3501-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2015\/02\/Jeff-and-other-in-front-3501-299x199.jpg 299w, https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2015\/02\/Jeff-and-other-in-front-3501.jpg 350w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Th<\/span>e concepts of gravity, electricity, and momentum, to name a few, were all demonstrated in a fun and entertaining way at the STEM outreach day on Thursday,\u00a0Jan. 29.\u00a0\u00a0The <a href=\"http:\/\/physics.cos.ucf.edu\/\">UCF\u00a0Physics Department<\/a> and the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cecs.ucf.edu\/\">College of Engineering and Computer Science<\/a> hosted this day of learning.\u00a0\u00a0The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.floridahightech.com\/assets-why-the-corridor\/tech-workforce-pipeline\/\">Florida High Tech Corridor Council&#8217;s techPATH group<\/a> co-sponsored the event, including a lunch for all the students and busing to and from the event.<\/p>\n<p>Approximately 80 first grade students from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ocps.net\/lc\/southwest\/egr\/Pages\/default.aspx\">Grand Avenue Primary Learning Center<\/a> in Parramore had the opportunity to tour and take part in different science and engineering based activities.\u00a0 The goal of the day was to have each child experience STEM in a way that would inspire them and help them to develop curiosity about all the fields in science.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2015\/02\/NAO-tai-chi.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-medium wp-image-11608 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2015\/02\/NAO-tai-chi-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"NAO tai chi\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2015\/02\/NAO-tai-chi-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2015\/02\/NAO-tai-chi-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2015\/02\/NAO-tai-chi-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2015\/02\/NAO-tai-chi-299x199.jpg 299w, https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2015\/02\/NAO-tai-chi.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Their day started with an experiment in gravity. They continued on to learn about the motion of object and observe bottle rockets. During their lunch, which\u00a0included yummy sandwiches from\u00a0Subway, the NAO robot strutted its stuff for the students.\u00a0 NAO showed the children many exciting\u00a0things that he could do, including kicking a soccer ball, demonstrating tai chi, working out including push-ups, and how to do the famous Macarena dance.\u00a0\u00a0NAO also interacted with the children by speaking to them and even responding to one child&#8217;s voice commands.<\/p>\n<p>Their day concluded with experiments with electric charges and magnets.\u00a0 The purpose of this was to find common things that they could use to conduct experiments.\u00a0 From rubbing\u00a0balloons to show charging by friction, to using straws that show electrostatic repulsion, the students learned much about science through the use of normal household items.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I think that the kids will remember most of \u00a0the demos that they played with,&#8221; Dr. Ahlam Al-Rawi said. &#8220;Every time they use a straw when they drink a beverage they will remember that they can explore an important concept in physics.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>With help from physics lecturers <a href=\"http:\/\/physics.cos.ucf.edu\/people\/bindell-jeff\/\">Dr.\u00a0Jeff Bindell<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/physics.cos.ucf.edu\/people\/al-rawi-ahlam\/\">Dr.\u00a0Ahlam Al-Rawi<\/a> and teacher in residence <a href=\"http:\/\/physics.cos.ucf.edu\/people\/thomas-kevin\/\">Kevin Thomas<\/a>, the students were able to have a fun filled day of hands on learning.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This is the youngest group of future STEM students that I have ever worked with.&#8221;, remarks Dr. Jeff Bindell.\u00a0 From the comments the teachers and students gave as they were leaving,\u00a0the events of the day
