She is currently in the Anthropology Ph.D. program at the University of Florida in Gainesville.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2015\/04\/Paleopathology-Meeting-Amanda-presenting-resized.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-12128 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2015\/04\/Paleopathology-Meeting-Amanda-presenting-resized.jpg\" alt=\"Paleopathology Meeting - Amanda presenting resized\" width=\"206\" height=\"174\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2015\/04\/Paleopathology-Meeting-Amanda-presenting-resized.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2015\/04\/Paleopathology-Meeting-Amanda-presenting-resized-299x252.jpg 299w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 206px) 100vw, 206px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 206px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 206\/174;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>She\u00a0spent two years doing research for her project titled &#8220;The Road to Wellville: Investigating the Relationship between Migration and Leprosy in the Dakhleh Oasis, Egypt.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In her research, she proposes an alternative hypothesis as to why there are foreign individuals with leprosy living and dying in the Dakhleh Oasis, Egypt.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI used the oxygen stable isotope to identify the individuals with leprosy who are foreign, and argued that they migrated to access a mineral called alum,\u201d Groff said. \u201cThis research is the first to make an inference which connects the context of the Dakhleh Oasis with alum, migration, and leprosy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Master\u2019s student Armando Anzellini also took home an award. The Cockburn Student Prize for Best Student Poster was awarded to him for his presentation on determining the normal range in stature variation\u00a0for the ancient Chachapoya culture (A.D. 800-1530) from the Northern Peruvian Andes.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2015\/04\/Paleopathology-Meeting-Armando-with-poster-resized.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-12130\" src=\"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2015\/04\/Paleopathology-Meeting-Armando-with-poster-resized.jpg\" alt=\"Paleopathology Meeting - Armando with poster resized\" width=\"342\" height=\"192\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2015\/04\/Paleopathology-Meeting-Armando-with-poster-resized.jpg 500w, https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2015\/04\/Paleopathology-Meeting-Armando-with-poster-resized-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2015\/04\/Paleopathology-Meeting-Armando-with-poster-resized-299x168.jpg 299w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 342px) 100vw, 342px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was stunned when I won the prize, I couldn&#8217;t believe it,\u201d Anzellini said. \u201cI think I was more excited when Professor Groff won her prize, though, since it meant the UCF Department of Anthropology was gaining some recognition.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Starting in May 2013, while still an undergraduate student, he collected data along with <a href=\"http:\/\/anthropology.cos.ucf.edu\/people\/toyne-marla\/\">Dr. J. Marla Toyne<\/a> and Lori Epstein. Beginning his master\u2019s program at UCF in the fall of 2014 he decided to take on this project, which is the initial stage of his thesis looking at social complexity and identity in the Chachapoya.<\/p>\n<p>He hopes to turn his poster into a manuscript for publication and have it published in the official journal for the paleopathology association, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.paleopathology.org\/ijpp.html\">International Journal of Paleopathology<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>At the Paleopathology Association Annual Meeting in St. Louis, Missouri this March,\u00a0an instructor and a student from the anthropology department at the University of Central Florida received awards for their research presentations.
