{"id":12134,"date":"2015-04-20T11:38:23","date_gmt":"2015-04-20T15:38:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.cos.ucf.edu\/?p=12134"},"modified":"2016-12-01T13:01:53","modified_gmt":"2016-12-01T18:01:53","slug":"biology-student-is-massachusetts-bound","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/biology-student-is-massachusetts-bound\/","title":{"rendered":"Biology Student is Massachusetts Bound"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2015\/04\/pep_header1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12168\" src=\"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2015\/04\/pep_header1.jpg\" alt=\"pep_header1\" width=\"146\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Biology student,\u00a0and <a href=\"https:\/\/mcnair.ucf.edu\/students\/index.php\">UCF McNair Scholar<\/a>,\u00a0Antony Papadia was recently\u00a0chosen from a large pool of talented candidates from across the country\u00a0to win a spot in the<a href=\"http:\/\/www.woodsholediversity.org\/pep\/about.html\"> Woods Hole Partnership Education Program<\/a>.\u00a0 He is one of 15 candidates selected for this summer&#8217;s program.<\/p>\n<p>Papadia has been a UCF McNair Scholar since the Fall of 2013.\u00a0 The McNair Scholarship Program\u00a0is designed to prepare students from low-income, first-generation and traditionally under-represented groups for doctoral studies.<\/p>\n<p>The director of the McNair program, <a href=\"http:\/\/mcnair.ucf.edu\/program\/staff.php\">Michael Aldarondo-Jeffries<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/biology.cos.ucf.edu\/faculty\/walter-sotero\/\">Dr. Walter Sotero <\/a>were fundamental to his admission into the program.\u00a0Aldarondo-Jeffries has supported\u00a0him through many applications, advising\u00a0him\u00a0to deliver strong applications and to network with many different institutions.\u00a0Aldarondo-Jeffries also\u00a0strongly recommended\u00a0him for the Woods Hole PEP.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0Woods Hole\u00a0PEP\u00a0is designed primarily for college juniors and seniors who want to spend a summer gaining practical experience in marine and environmental science.\u00a0Hosted in Woods Hole, Massachusetts, the program offers a<em>\u00a0<\/em>four-week course and a six-to-ten week research project.<\/p>\n<p>After learning about the program from a trip to San Francisco with the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.msphds.org\/\">Minorities Striving and Pursuing Higher Degrees of Success in Earth System Science program<\/a>, he quickly began his application.<\/p>\n<p>The course for this summer is \u2018Ocean and Environmental Sciences: Global Climate Change.\u201d\u00a0The course is organized in modules devoted to different disciplines. The modules are integrated in that each discipline addresses the theme of Global Climate change. In addition to the course, participants will work on a research project that will give them the opportunity to apply some of the techniques learned through the course.m<\/p>\n<p>Papadia is looking forward to developing a mentor\/mentee relationship through this program, as well as working dedicatedly on his future research project.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy main research interest is determining the effects of biological and anthropogenic toxins and pollutants on the health, physiology, and adaptation of marine animal species, specifically on marine vertebrates such as sharks and fish,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>While his reaction upon winning was a very happy one, he was filled with many emotions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy mother recently passed away from breast cancer after three years of combating the disease, and she was my number one supporter,\u201d he said. \u201cI know she must be looking down very proud of the accomplishment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Papadia\u00a0has been a member of UCF\u00a0biology professor and Pegasus Professor, <a href=\"http:\/\/biology.cos.ucf.edu\/faculty\/linda-walters\/\">Dr.\u00a0Linda Walters&#8217; <\/a>research lab since January 2014.\u00a0 He has been involved in undergraduate research on oyster reef restoration that was presented at SURE and a regional Indian River Lagoon Conference.\u00a0 Papadia\u00a0is also on staff to assist Walters with marine conservation outreach events and has even dressed as a pirate to help lead the annual Ocean Day event for the children at <a href=\"http:\/\/csc.sdes.ucf.edu\/\">UCF Creative School for Children<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Dr. Linda Walters has been fundamental for my career path. She has been a huge support for my admission into various programs, including the NSF REU summer program, and the current Woods Hole PEP\u00a0program. She recommended me for the programs, but more importantly, she prepared me for them,&#8221;\u00a0 Papadia reflected<\/p>\n<p>Papadia\u00a0was born in Caracas, Venezuela, and moved to United States with\u00a0his mother when\u00a0he was 13.\u00a0He and his\u00a0mother worked very hard to be successful in the United States.\u00a0A big milestone in his life, Papadia\u00a0will be graduating from UCF on May 8, 2015 and his\u00a0future plans are to pursue a master\u2019s program in fisheries biology or aquatic animal physiology, and subsequently a Doctoral degree in aquatic animal health.
