Her topic is \u201cOut with the old, in with the new hypotheses: swimming behavior and genetic habitat shifts among wild-caught oceanic state turtles.\u201d She is considered an innovator for her work in the field.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font: 16px\/24px Georgia, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif;margin: 0px 0px 16px;color: #333333;text-indent: 0px;letter-spacing: normal;background-color: #ffffff\">Mansfield said she was honored to be asked to speak and hopes her students will benefit from their own presentations.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font: 16px\/24px Georgia, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif;margin: 0px 0px 16px;color: #333333;text-indent: 0px;letter-spacing: normal;background-color: #ffffff\">\u201cI\u2019m looking forward to it,\u201d she said. \u201cIt is a good to share and discuss with others conducting research in the field and it is a wonderful opportunity for students to present their work and network.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font: 16px\/24px Georgia, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif;margin: 0px 0px 16px;color: #333333;text-indent: 0px;letter-spacing: normal;background-color: #ffffff\">Mansfield heads the <a href=\"http:\/\/biology.cos.ucf.edu\/marineturtleresearchgroup\/\">UCF Marine Turtle Research Group<\/a>, which conducts work in Brevard County as well as the Gulf of Mexico and waters off South America\u2019s coastline.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font: 16px\/24px Georgia, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif;margin: 0px 0px 16px;color: #333333;text-indent: 0px;letter-spacing: normal;background-color: #ffffff\">Among the five students traveling to Mugla, Turkey, for the conference was Katrina Phillips, who earlier this month earned a <a href=\"https:\/\/news.cos.ucf.edu\/graduate-students-earn-competitive-research-fellowships\/\">National Science Foundation<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>Graduate Research Fellowship<\/a>\u00a0 to continue her research into endangered sea turtles.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font: 16px\/24px Georgia, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif;margin: 0px 0px 16px;color: #333333;text-indent: 0px;letter-spacing: normal;background-color: #ffffff\">The conference is one of the biggest sea turtle science and conservation meetings in the world and draws hundreds of experts in the field. This year, there will be 135 presentations and workshops and 225 posters shared with attendees. Topics cover everything from education and policy to genetics and economic and cultural studies as they relate to sea turtles.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font: 16px\/24px Georgia, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif;margin: 0px 0px 16px;color: #333333;text-indent: 0px;letter-spacing: normal;background-color: #ffffff\">Mansfield\u2019s talk\u00a0included new information she and biologist Nathan Putman covered in an article published earlier this month, as well as other research she conducts on ocean-going juvenile turtles. Putman, the lead author, works for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sefsc.noaa.gov\/\">NOAA\u2019s Southeast Fisheries Science Center in Miami<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font: 16px\/24px Georgia, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif;margin: 0px 0px 16px;color: #333333;text-indent: 0px;letter-spacing: normal;background-color: #ffffff\">They discovered that even at a tender 6 to18 months, turtles are very active swimmers.
