But from the seat of his wheelchair, he\u2019s never been able to see through the viewing port of the microscope, and had to depend on his colleagues for help.<\/p>\n<p>That changed on Thursday, when \u2013 after months of preparation \u2013 a new high-tech wheelchair was delivered to Lodge at the physics lab where he\u2019s conducted research for the past four years. The power wheelchair has a \u201cseat elevator\u201d capable of lifting Lodge to a height that allows him to work with scientific instruments that have been out of reach until now. He can move around the lab safely, for the first time at eye level with his fellow researchers.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font: 16px\/24px Georgia, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif;margin: 0px 0px 16px;color: #333333;text-indent: 0px;letter-spacing: normal;background-color: #ffffff\"><a href=\"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2015\/05\/Michael-Lodge-3-200x300.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-12369\" src=\"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2015\/05\/Michael-Lodge-3-200x300-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"Michael Lodge 3 200x300\" width=\"146\" height=\"221\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m very excited, not just about getting the wheelchair, but also what it represents,\u201d said Lodge, 28, who was left paraplegic at age 8 after surgery to remove a tumor embedded in his spine. \u201cTraditionally there aren\u2019t that many people with mobility impairments in science because of the barriers. Being in a wheelchair, unfortunately, does limit your opportunities. With this, it\u2019s a whole new world of opportunities that were closed off.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font: 16px\/24px Georgia, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif;margin: 0px 0px 16px;color: #333333;text-indent: 0px;letter-spacing: normal;background-color: #ffffff\"><a href=\"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2015\/05\/Michael-Lodge-2-200x299.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12372\" src=\"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2015\/05\/Michael-Lodge-2-200x299.jpg\" alt=\"Michael Lodge 2 200x299\" width=\"299\" height=\"200\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>UCF physics professor <a href=\"http:\/\/physics.cos.ucf.edu\/people\/ishigami-masahiro\/\">Masa Ishigami, Ph.D<\/a>.,\u00a0helped arrange for the $14,000 wheelchair at no cost to Lodge. Manufacturer <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amysystems.com\/en\/\">Amysystems<\/a> agreed to discount the price of the wheelchair by half. A portion of a National Science Foundation grant brought the cost down further. And when he learned of the effort, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cos.ucf.edu\/people\/johnson-michael-d\/\">Michael Johnson, Ph.D., <\/a>dean of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cos.ucf.edu\/\">UCF College of Sciences<\/a>, arranged for UCF to cover the rest of the cost. The wheelchair was delivered to Lodge by distributor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/majorsmedicalsupply\">Majors Medical Supply<\/a> of DeLand on Thursday afternoon. Lodge took it directly to the physics lab where he conducts his research.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s one of the best students I\u2019ve worked with at UCF, hands down.
