{"id":12377,"date":"2015-05-11T13:05:11","date_gmt":"2015-05-11T17:05:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.cos.ucf.edu\/?p=12377"},"modified":"2016-12-01T12:54:56","modified_gmt":"2016-12-01T17:54:56","slug":"snake-venom-variations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/snake-venom-variations\/","title":{"rendered":"Research That Bites Back"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2015\/05\/Strickland-snakes-200x269.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-12381\" src=\"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2015\/05\/Strickland-snakes-200x269.jpg\" alt=\"Strickland snakes 200x269\" width=\"129\" height=\"170\" \/><\/a>Jason Strickland, UCF doctoral student in\u00a0biology,\u00a0was just awarded a $3,700 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amnh.org\/our-research\/richard-gilder-graduate-school\/academics-and-research\/fellowship-and-grant-opportunities\/research-grants-and-student-exchange-fellowships#grants\">Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Grant <\/a>for his dissertation research on Mojave Rattlesnakes.\u00a0 This\u00a0grant comes through the American Museum of Natural History and<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>supports research on North American fauna in any phase of wildlife conservation or natural history and\u00a0includes everything north of the Isthmus of Panama, including the Caribbean.\u00a0 The grant is meant to act as seed money for new researchers.<\/p>\n<p>Strickland has had a lifelong interest in snakes. After earning his bachelor\u2019s and master\u2019s degrees at Angelo State University in Texas, he came to UCF for the Ph.D. program in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.graduatecatalog.ucf.edu\/programs\/program.aspx?id=1460&amp;program=Conservation%20Biology%20PhD\">Conservation Biology<\/a> specifically to work with <a href=\"http:\/\/biology.cos.ucf.edu\/faculty\/christopher-parkinson\/\">Christopher Parkinson, Ph.D<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I was very excited when I got the grant. I was the only one in my lab when I got the email so I ran and high fived the people in Dr. Hoffman\u2019s lab next door&#8221;, says Strickland, &#8220;I was so excited because funding is really hard to come by. A lot of students from all over the country apply for these grants and I am competing with really interesting and exciting projects.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The grant\u00a0funding will pay for field work to find rattlesnakes and collect venom, venom glands, and other tissues that\u00a0Strickland needs to complete\u00a0his dissertation. It will also pay for some of the molecular work that\u00a0he will have to do to sequence DNA and RNA to understand the evolution of venom.<\/p>\n<p>The central question being explored in his dissertation is to determine why there is so much venom variation in Mojave Rattlesnakes.\u00a0\u00a0His research will answer\u00a0evolutionary questions in venomous snakes and could have implications for antivenom production and use.<\/p>\n<p>Strickland is also a mentor to an undergraduate student, Hollis Dahn, who also received this grant last year for $2,500.\u00a0 Her research involves studying genetic variation in two species of non-venomous snakes.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to this grant, Strickland has\u00a0also received the Howard McCarley Research Grant from the Southwestern Association of Naturalists ($1000) and Prairie Biotic Inc.
