The students will receive stipends, lodging and often travel funding as compensation for their work in the research programs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBeing an undergraduate researcher has opened doors for me that I did not even know existed,\u201d said Samantha Mensah, a <a href=\"http:\/\/chemistry.cos.ucf.edu\" target=\"_blank\">chemistry major<\/a> who will conduct research at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.upmc.fr\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\">Universit\u00e9 Pierre-et-Marie-Curie<\/a> in Paris as part of a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.our.ucf.edu\/opportunities\/reu.php\" target=\"_blank\">National Science Foundation-Research Experience for Undergraduates<\/a> program. \u201cI never expected to be able to participate in research outside of the United States during my undergraduate experience.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mensah\u2019s three-month program will focus on synthesizing and characterizing new semiconductor materials.<\/p>\n<p>Hollis Dahn, a <a href=\"http:\/\/biology.cos.ucf.edu\" target=\"_blank\">biology<\/a> major, will study ecology and evolution in Nanjing, China, for the second time as she continues her research and serves as a guide in the NSF-REU China program. The program pairs undergraduate students with faculty mentors, who then conduct research projects at <a href=\"http:\/\/eng.njfu.edu.cn\" target=\"_blank\">Nanjing Forestry University<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn 2014 I traveled to remote mountainous areas to survey for frogs in the family Megophryidae (Asian Horned Frogs) as their diversity was thought to be underestimated in China,\u201d Dahn said. \u201cWe encountered several known frog species and one population we couldn\u2019t identify as a known species.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her return to China will be to collect more samples and conduct genetic analyses of the previously undocumented species.<\/p>\n<p>Many of these students are part of structured programs at UCF including, but not limited to, <a href=\"https:\/\/mcnair.ucf.edu\" target=\"_blank\">McNair Scholars<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/research.honors.ucf.edu\/honors-in-the-Major\" target=\"_blank\">Honors in the Major<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.our.ucf.edu\/opportunities\/ramp.php\" target=\"_blank\">Research &amp; Mentoring Program<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/UCFResearch\" target=\"_blank\">The Office of Undergraduate Research Facebook page<\/a>\u00a0will highlight these outstanding undergraduate researchers and their experiences in weekly posts about summer research.<\/p>\n<p>For a full list of students visit the original article <a href=\"http:\/\/today.ucf.edu\/30-undergraduate-researchers-accepted-at-summer-programs\/\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>More than 30 UCF student researchers will participate in research programs around the world this summer.
