{"id":12794,"date":"2015-07-01T13:53:15","date_gmt":"2015-07-01T17:53:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.cos.ucf.edu\/?p=12794"},"modified":"2015-07-01T13:53:15","modified_gmt":"2015-07-01T17:53:15","slug":"new-invention-improves-parkinsons-symptoms","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/new-invention-improves-parkinsons-symptoms\/","title":{"rendered":"New Invention Improves Parkinson\u2019s Symptoms"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>UCF Professor Emeritus <a href=\"http:\/\/psychology.cos.ucf.edu\/people\/gilson-richard\/\">Richard Gilson, Ph.D.<\/a>, along with a team of neurological experts, created a new tool to battle the effects of Parkinson\u2019s disease.<a href=\"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2015\/07\/Gilson.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"  wp-image-12796 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2015\/07\/Gilson.jpg\" alt=\"Gilson\" width=\"207\" height=\"197\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2015\/07\/Gilson.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2015\/07\/Gilson-299x285.jpg 299w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 207px) 100vw, 207px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Gilson received a patent for the invention that will help patients struggling with conditions including Tourette\u2019s syndrome, Epilepsy, Essential Tremor, and mood disorders last year though UCF.<\/p>\n<p>Parkinson&#8217;s is an incurable disorder that destroys nerve cells in the brain, according to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pdf.org\/\">Parkinson&#8217;s Disease Foundation<\/a>. The symptoms include rigid muscles, tremors and difficulty walking and speaking.<\/p>\n<p>Gilson was diagnosed with the disease in 2003. He relied on a brain-stimulation device that featured a battery the size of a pack of cards that bulged from under his skin to keep the symptoms repressed. Deep-brain stimulation has been an FDA-approved method of treatment for more than a decade. However, in order to keep the device working, Gilson had to undergo potentially life-threatening surgery every two or three years to replace the battery.<\/p>\n<p>Gilson wanted to improve the technology without having to face dangerous procedures.<\/p>\n<p>The invention consists of a quarter-sized apparatus, which would be implanted in the skull. It includes a nickel-sized rechargeable battery that lasts about nine years, and would eliminate the lump created by the current battery.
