{"id":12897,"date":"2015-08-03T14:11:51","date_gmt":"2015-08-03T18:11:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.cos.ucf.edu\/?p=12897"},"modified":"2021-02-10T17:50:19","modified_gmt":"2021-02-10T22:50:19","slug":"anthropology-students-help-uncover-napoleon-army-death-mystery","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/anthropology-students-help-uncover-napoleon-army-death-mystery\/","title":{"rendered":"Anthropology Students Help Uncover Napoleon Army Death Mystery"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>After\u00a0the discovery of\u00a0a mass grave in 2001\u00a0featuring the remains of Napoleon Bonaparte\u2019s army in Lithuania, UCF anthropology students Serenela Pelier and Sammantha Holder recently performed a research study on the\u00a0remains of the soldiers.\u00a0 Over 3,000 corpses were found and revealed to be from \u201cNapoleon\u2019s Grande Arm\u00e9e\u201d in 1812. The soldiers were amidst traveling through Vilnius, Lithuania after retreating from Russia.<\/p>\n<p>Pelier and Holder, under the direction of UCF bioarchaeologist <a href=\"http:\/\/anthropology.cos.ucf.edu\/people\/dupras-tosha\/\">Tosha Dupras<\/a>, Ph.D., used stable isotope analyses on the samples of the remains. Pelier applied oxygen isotope analysis\u00a0to find out the geographical origin of nine of the <a href=\"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2015\/07\/CNN_Anthro.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-12922 alignright lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2015\/07\/CNN_Anthro.png\" alt=\"CNN_Anthro\" width=\"281\" height=\"156\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2015\/07\/CNN_Anthro.png 901w, https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2015\/07\/CNN_Anthro-300x167.png 300w, https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2015\/07\/CNN_Anthro-768x427.png 768w, https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2015\/07\/CNN_Anthro-299x166.png 299w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 281px) 100vw, 281px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 281px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 281\/156;\" \/><\/a>skeletons, while Holder utilized carbon and nitrogen isotope analysis on 78 individuals\u00a0to learn about the diet and starvation.<\/p>\n<p>Napoleon\u2019s soldiers had little to eat, and according to Pelier and Holder\u2019s findings, they died from starvation, hypothermia, and typhus.\u00a0 Previous studies had revealed that the\u00a0teeth of the soldiers showed rampant dental cavities and indications of stress during childhood, and over one-quarter of the dead had succumbed to epidemic typhus, a louse-borne disease.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe prolonged periods of starvation possibly stem from career-long military service in numerous campaigns throughout the Napoleonic Wars, or from nutritional stresses prior to military conscription,\u201d Holder wrote in her analysis.<\/p>\n<p>The members of Napoleon\u2019s Grande Arm\u00e9e have been laid to rest in a new burial location alongside other soldiers at the Antakalnis Military Cemetery in Vilnius.<\/p>\n<p>For a complete breakdown of Pelier and Holder\u2019s research and more information on the remains of Napoleon\u2019s army, visit:\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/kristinakillgrove\/2015\/07\/25\/skeletons-of-napoleons-soldiers-in-mass-grave-show-signs-of-starvation\/\">http:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/kristinakillgrove\/2015\/07\/25\/skeletons-of-napoleons-soldiers-in-mass-grave-show-signs-of-starvation\/<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Dupras went into further detail when she was interviewed by CNN about the remains that were uncovered.<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/videos\/us\/2015\/07\/28\/napoleon-troops-armee-mass-grave-starvation-lithuania.cnn\"> Click here<\/a> to watch the video.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>After\u00a0the discovery of\u00a0a mass grave in 2001\u00a0featuring the remains of Napoleon Bonaparte\u2019s army in Lithuania, UCF anthropology students Serenela Pelier and Sammantha Holder recently performed a research study on the\u00a0remains of the soldiers.\u00a0 Over 3,000 corpses were found and revealed to be from \u201cNapoleon\u2019s Grande Arm\u00e9e\u201d in 1812.
