This event aimed to show each student the many different career paths available to graduates with a physics degree. The students\u00a0were\u00a0encouraged to bring their parents along, while they heard from physicists, as well as speakers from the physics\u00a0department about the great career opportunities in their fields. With approximately\u00a0100 people in attendance, this was a fun filled day of physics exploration.<\/p>\n<p>The day started with some light refreshments in the <a href=\"https:\/\/map.ucf.edu\/locations\/121\/physical-sciences-building-psb\/\">physical sciences building<\/a> and the Dean of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cos.ucf.edu\/\">College of Sciences<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cos.ucf.edu\/people\/johnson-michael-d\/\">Michael Johnson, Ph.D.<\/a>, kicked off the event with a welcome speech.\u00a0\u00a0Several speakers then took the podium. Among the speakers were, physics chair professor <a href=\"http:\/\/physics.cos.ucf.edu\/people\/rahman-talat-s\/\">Talat Rahman, Ph.D., <\/a>assistant professor, <a href=\"http:\/\/physics.cos.ucf.edu\/people\/kaden-william\/\">William Kaden, Ph.D.,<\/a> director, president and CEO of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.irradianceglass.com\/about-us\/\">Irradiance Glass<\/a>, J. David Musgraves, Ph.D., and assistant professor <a href=\"http:\/\/physics.cos.ucf.edu\/people\/dove-adrienne\/\">Adrienne Dove<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-13687 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2015\/10\/Physics-Career-Day-40-Dean-J-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Physics Career Day 40 - Dean J\" width=\"245\" height=\"163\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2015\/10\/Physics-Career-Day-40-Dean-J-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2015\/10\/Physics-Career-Day-40-Dean-J-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2015\/10\/Physics-Career-Day-40-Dean-J-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2015\/10\/Physics-Career-Day-40-Dean-J-299x199.jpg 299w, https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2015\/10\/Physics-Career-Day-40-Dean-J.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 245px) 100vw, 245px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Students heard the personal stories of successful physicists, how they chose their career path, as well as some of the exciting things they do on a daily basis and the great career opportunities within their fields. A panel discussion was also held\u00a0between current graduate students, faculty and staff, allowing\u00a0for questions\u00a0and interaction with\u00a0the prospective students.<\/p>\n<p>At 12:30pm\u00a0the attendees were treated to pizza for\u00a0lunch.\u00a0After lunch, the students, with their parents and\/or teachers,\u00a0were introduced to the undergraduate physics program. There they learned about the classes that are included in the undergraduate track for a physics majors, and what they can do now to prepare to study physics.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/physics.cos.ucf.edu\/people\/tetard-laurene\/\">Laurene Tetard, Ph.D.<\/a>, also introduced them to the new method for teaching physics that UCF has introduced. &#8220;The method has eliminated long lectures\u00a0or tests and has implemented team work.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The students were then\u00a0taken on\u00a05 different lab tours of the physics research facilities to see and better understand the learning environment at UCF. The lab tours were run entirely by graduate students.<\/p>\n<p>Along with the<a href=\"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2015\/10\/Physics-Career-Day-9.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-13691 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2015\/10\/Physics-Career-Day-9-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Physics Career Day 9\" width=\"261\" height=\"174\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2015\/10\/Physics-Career-Day-9-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2015\/10\/Physics-Career-Day-9-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2015\/10\/Physics-Career-Day-9-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2015\/10\/Physics-Career-Day-9-299x199.jpg 299w, https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2015\/10\/Physics-Career-Day-9.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 261px) 100vw, 261px\" \/><\/a> tours, there were experiments and demonstrations led by\u00a0physics undergraduate and graduate students. The demonstrations included the\u00a0Coca Cola and Mentos experiment and making\u00a0ice cream\u00a0with liquid nitrogen.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/physics.cos.ucf.edu\/people\/al-rawi-ahlam\/\">Ahlam Al-Rawi, Ph.D<\/a>.,\u00a0recognized all the physics students\u00a0on their hard work\u00a0and the group effort it took to make this event a success; this was the first time graduate students were completely in charge of many of the activities.<\/p>\n<p>They closed out the day with delicious ice cream and giveaways provided by Florida High Tech Corridor Council.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2015\/10\/Physics-Career-Day-24.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-13692 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2015\/10\/Physics-Career-Day-24-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Physics Career Day 24\" width=\"257\" height=\"171\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2015\/10\/Physics-Career-Day-24-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2015\/10\/Physics-Career-Day-24-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2015\/10\/Physics-Career-Day-24-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2015\/10\/Physics-Career-Day-24-299x199.jpg 299w, https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2015\/10\/Physics-Career-Day-24.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 257px) 100vw, 257px\" \/><\/a>A big thanks goes out to the physics out-reach committee for organizing this\u00a0exciting and educational day.\u00a0The physics faculty and staff expressed the feeling of community within the physics department and Dr. Al-Rahi emphasized\u00a0&#8220;caring, community and communication&#8221;; these three factors that were implemented into the activities throughout out the day, but should also be\u00a0applied to everyone&#8217;s daily lives.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/physics.cos.ucf.edu\/people\/mucciolo-eduardo\/\">Eduardo Mucciolo&#8217;s, Ph.D.,<\/a> goal for this outreach event was to &#8220;get the students interested in science 1st, coming to UCF 2nd\u00a0and going into physics 3rd.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On Saturday October 3rd, UCF&#8217;s Physics Department hosted their 3rd annual Physics Career Exploration Day.
