Faculty and graduate students spent a fun-filled day with autistic children, providing them with hands-on archeological experiences.<\/p>\n<p>Archaeologists for Autism is a non-profit organization that allows children on the autism spectrum to participate with and engage in archaeology in a safe, fun, and experiential manner.\u00a0Archeologists for Autism&#8217;s mission is\u00a0to unlock the potential of children with developmental disabilities. With an autistic\u00a0daughter of his own, it was difficult\u00a0to find activities for her to\u00a0take\u00a0part\u00a0in; he wanted to create an event that\u00a0autistic kids could, not only participate in, but would also\u00a0enjoy.<\/p>\n<p>The 345 participants who\u00a0registered and attended the\u00a0event received free lunch and could come and\u00a0go\u00a0as they pleased. All the goods and vendors were based on in-kind donations.<\/p>\n<p>The Graduate Anthropology Association had 20 volunteers come out to the event.\u00a0\u00a0Included in\u00a0these volunteers were\u00a04\u00a0faculty members, <a href=\"http:\/\/anthropology.cos.ucf.edu\/people\/wheeler-sandra\/\">Sandra Wheeler, Ph.D.<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/anthropology.cos.ucf.edu\/people\/barber-sarah\/\">Stacy Barber, Ph.D.<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/anthropology.cos.ucf.edu\/people\/toyne-marla\/\">J. Marla Toyne, Ph.D.<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/anthropology.cos.ucf.edu\/people\/starbuck-john\/\">John Starbuck, Ph.D.<\/a>, 5 undergraduate volunteers and several UCF alumni.\u00a0 The volunteers\u00a0worked at\u00a0the various stations and taught the children and families about archaeology.<\/p>\n<p>Several other groups, including the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nationalparkservice.org\/\">National Park Service<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flpublicarchaeology.org\/\">Florida Archaeology Network<\/a>, and faculty and staff from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flmnh.ufl.edu\/\">Florida Museum of Natural History <\/a>were also at the event to help demonstrate. Some of the most popular activities were the fossil and artifact excavation, the fossil making and the spear throwing with Atlatls.<\/p>\n<p>Children\u00a0were able to use their social skills, and various functional skills to learn about archeology, all while having fun.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I have worked with the students and faculty from the department of anthropology since 2008. They work with me doing archaeological surveys, [they] assist me as the archaeologist at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, as well on my research projects on weekends [and] [f]or the past 2 years we have worked together on Archaeologists for Autism.&#8221; states Penders, &#8220;In my 31 years of doing archaeology, the graduate students are some of the finest young men and women I have worked with.
