{"id":13933,"date":"2015-10-30T11:00:49","date_gmt":"2015-10-30T15:00:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.cos.ucf.edu\/?p=13933"},"modified":"2015-10-30T11:00:49","modified_gmt":"2015-10-30T15:00:49","slug":"substance-abuse-and-parenting-re-teaching-how-to-parent","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/substance-abuse-and-parenting-re-teaching-how-to-parent\/","title":{"rendered":"Substance Abuse and Parenting: Re-teaching How to Parent"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_13934\" style=\"width: 321px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2015\/10\/Substance-Abuse-picture.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13934\" class=\"wp-image-13934\" src=\"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2015\/10\/Substance-Abuse-picture-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Substance Abuse - picture\" width=\"311\" height=\"207\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2015\/10\/Substance-Abuse-picture-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2015\/10\/Substance-Abuse-picture-299x199.jpg 299w, https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2015\/10\/Substance-Abuse-picture.jpg 375w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 311px) 100vw, 311px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-13934\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Credit: Nick Russett<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Parents who abuse controlled substances have a higher risk of abusing their children, but research shows they could be educated to be more effective parents.<\/p>\n<p>A review paper published online in <a class=\"external\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nature.com\/pr\/journal\/vaop\/naam\/abs\/pr2015201a.html)\" target=\"_blank\">Nature\u2019s Pediatric Research<\/a>\u00a0 journal this month indicates that along with treatment for substance abuse, parents can greatly benefit from therapy aimed at redirecting their behavior and building parent-child attachment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSubstance abuse is a sign of a person\u2019s inability to self-regulate and the same is true for those people when it comes to parenting,\u201d said lead author <a href=\"http:\/\/psychology.cos.ucf.edu\/people\/renk-kimberly\/\">Kimberly Renk, Ph.D.,<\/a> a clinical psychologist and director of the <a class=\"external\" href=\"http:\/\/understandingchildren.cos.ucf.edu\/Home.html\" target=\"_blank\">Understanding Children and Families Laboratory<\/a>\u00a0 at the University of Central Florida. \u201cFor a lot of people, they are reliving their own trauma from childhood and, given their background, they really don\u2019t know how to parent well.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Renk and co-author <a href=\"https:\/\/med.ucf.edu\/directory\/profile\/neil-w-boris\/\">Neil W. Boris, M.D.,<\/a> Chief of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nemours.org\/service\/medical\/behavioralhealth.html?location=nchorlando\">Behavioral Health at Nemours Children\u2019s Hospital<\/a>, are calling for more research into effective parenting treatment models and for current treatments to recognize the risk to very young children and to incorporate an attachment-focused parenting intervention component to help protect them. There\u2019s even some indication that addiction to substances may actually physiologically impact the way parents attach to and interact with their children.<\/p>\n<p>Some studies indicate that dopamine \u2013 the chemical released in the body during a high \u2013 is also released during pleasing parent-child interactions. And that \u201cgood connection\u201d is needed to help parents and young children bond. Several studies suggest craving for other substances may actually impede a person\u2019s natural instinct to bond, nurture and protect offspring. More in-depth research is needed, Renk said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSociety needs to do a better job helping substance-abusing parents connect with their children,\u201d Boris said. \u201cWe need more funding to study models of intervention and need more providers trained to deliver those interventions.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_69001\" style=\"width: 229px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/today.ucf.edu\/files\/2015\/10\/Boris-Neil.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-69001\" class=\"wp-image-69001 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/today.ucf.edu\/files\/2015\/10\/Boris-Neil-219x300.jpg\" alt=\"Boris, Neil\" width=\"219\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-69001\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Dr. Neil W. Boris, Chief of Behavioral Health at Nemours Children\u2019s Hospital<\/em><\/p><\/div>\n<p>This is no small problem.
