{"id":14111,"date":"2015-11-10T12:45:46","date_gmt":"2015-11-10T17:45:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.cos.ucf.edu\/?p=14111"},"modified":"2015-11-10T12:45:46","modified_gmt":"2015-11-10T17:45:46","slug":"ucf-science-cafe-relates-sharks-space-and-stress","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/ucf-science-cafe-relates-sharks-space-and-stress\/","title":{"rendered":"UCF Science Caf\u00e9 Relates Sharks, Space, and Stress"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_14112\" style=\"width: 320px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2015\/11\/3rd-science-cafe-Neuberger.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14112\" class=\"wp-image-14112\" src=\"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2015\/11\/3rd-science-cafe-Neuberger.jpg\" alt=\"3rd science cafe - Neuberger\" width=\"310\" height=\"233\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-14112\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Credit: Deanna Ferrante, Central Florida Future<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Here&#8217;s something that\u00a0sharks, space and student stress all have in common:\u00a0They can all be scientifically examined through communication.<\/p>\n<p>Attendees found out how linguistic analysis links all of these otherwise unrelated topics Thursday, November 5th,\u00a0when the College of Sciences held its third Science Caf\u00e9 of the semester.<\/p>\n<p>The series of talks began in September, and have since allowed individuals to learn about a variety of topics in many fields of science, including political sciences, biology, health sciences, cosmology and sociology.<\/p>\n<p>Thursday\u2019s talk featured <a href=\"http:\/\/communication.cos.ucf.edu\/person\/lindsay-neuberger\/\">Lindsay Neuberger, Ph.D.,<\/a> \u00a0an assistant professor of human communication at the <a href=\"http:\/\/communication.cos.ucf.edu\/\">Nicholson School of Communication<\/a>, who talked about the scientific examination of communication in a presentation entitled, \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cos.ucf.edu\/cafe\/dr-lindsay-neuberger\/\">What We Say Matters: Sharks, Space and Student Stress<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"module-position-OkBwI8oS2Gg\">\n<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p>Neuberger discussed a scientific examination of communication through linguistic analysis, which entails categorizing words into meaningful groups and looking at the frequency of certain words. This information can then give us insight into our health and increase our quality of life.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cThe end goal of all of this is to protect human life,\u201d Neuberger said in her speech. \u201cAnd that\u2019s a pretty good goal to have.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Throughout the talk, she explained how using linguistic-analysis tools, such as the Linguistic Inquirer and Word Count program, helps categorize words into data that can then be used in a variety of different fields.<\/p>\n<p>Neuberger utilized LIWC to research the language used by shark-diving websites, which led to her building a lexicon dictionary of different emotions, which was picked up by NASA to help research the emotional strain and stress of their astronauts during training.<\/p>\n<p>Now, the research is being applied to medical students with the goal of improving their interactions with standardized, or practice, patients.<\/p>\n<p>Tom Briggs, the director of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ehs.ucf.edu\/home.html\">Environmental Health and Safety<\/a>, which helps sponsor the Science Caf\u00e9, said that talks like these provide an important resource for not only students or faculty, but for the community as a whole.<\/p>\n<div id=\"module-position-OkBwI8oDhF4\">\n<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s what this is,\u201d Briggs said. \u201cIt\u2019s the university coming together to educate the community.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/jdonnelly319.wordpress.com\/\">Julie Donnelly<\/a>, a chemistry grad student and president of the <a href=\"http:\/\/chemistry.cos.ucf.edu\/uknighted\/\">Uknighted Chemistry Graduate Association<\/a>, which helps to organize the talks, said that the Science Caf\u00e9 allows people to see a different side to science.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think it\u2019s a really good opportunity for people to talk about science, but in a more relaxing environment,\u201d she said. \u201cThe talks are engaging; it\u2019s not boring, it\u2019s fun.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Final Talk of the <\/strong><strong>Fall\u00a02015 <\/strong><strong>Science Caf\u00e9 series:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2015\/11\/Alan-Stern-science-cafe.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-14171 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2015\/11\/Alan-Stern-science-cafe.jpg\" alt=\"Alan Stern - science cafe\" width=\"153\" height=\"191\" \/><\/a>On Thursday, December 10th, join <a href=\"http:\/\/fsi.ucf.edu\/person\/alan-stern\/\">Alan Stern, Ph.D.<\/a>, as he presents his first-hand experience as the principal investigator for NASA\u2019s historic New Horizons mission to Pluto.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Stern, who is working with the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.swri.org\/\">Southwest Research Institute<\/a> on the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/mission_pages\/newhorizons\/main\/index.html\">New Horizons Project<\/a>, will show images from the spacecraft as it made its closest approach to Pluto and its moons on July 14, 2015.
