Lapalme and Assistant Professors\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/computationalpsychology.org\/people\/\">Wei Wang, Ph.D.<\/a>, and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/psychology.cos.ucf.edu\/people\/joseph-dana\/\">Dana Joseph, Ph.D.<\/a>, of the department of psychology,\u00a0collaborated\u00a0on a recently\u00a0published paper, \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0191886915300118\">Measurement equivalence of the Wong and Law Emotional Intelligence Scale across cultures: An item response theory approach.<\/a>\u201d,\u00a0regarding\u00a0cross cultural differences in emotional intelligence between Chinese and U.S. college students.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Wang&#8217;s lab, the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/computationalpsychology.org\/\">Computational Psychology Laboratory<\/a>, studies applied psychometrics, social networks, and big data. By collaborating with Dr. Joseph, Dr. Saklofske (University of Western Ontario), and Dr. Yan (Beijing Normal University) their team recently found that appraising other\u2019s emotions is the most challenging component in emotional intelligence across cultures.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2016\/01\/Dr.-Wang-publication-pic-3.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-14870\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-14870 \" src=\"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2016\/01\/Dr.-Wang-publication-pic-3.jpg\" alt=\"Dr. Wang publication pic 3\" width=\"307\" height=\"227\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2016\/01\/Dr.-Wang-publication-pic-3.jpg 359w, https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2016\/01\/Dr.-Wang-publication-pic-3-300x222.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2016\/01\/Dr.-Wang-publication-pic-3-299x222.jpg 299w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 307px) 100vw, 307px\" \/><\/a>This interesting finding was discovered by using the state-of-the-art ideal-point item response theory (IRT) model to examine the most widely used emotional intelligence measure that was administered to over 1000 college students in Beijing and United States.<\/p>\n<p>This emotional intelligence measure consists of four dimensions: self-emotional appraisal, other-emotional appraisal, use of emotion, and regulation of emotions.\u00a0Dr. Wang\u2019s research team\u00a0found that\u00a0there was negligible difference in self-emotional appraisal and regulation of emotions between American and Chinese cultures.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>However, the difference\u00a0was fairly large for the other-emotional appraisal dimension, followed by the use of emotion.<a href=\"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2016\/01\/Dr.-Wang-publication-pic-2.png\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-14843\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-14843 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2016\/01\/Dr.-Wang-publication-pic-2-300x231.png\" alt=\"Dr. Wang publication pic 2\" width=\"300\" height=\"231\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2016\/01\/Dr.-Wang-publication-pic-2-300x231.png 300w, https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2016\/01\/Dr.-Wang-publication-pic-2-299x230.png 299w, https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2016\/01\/Dr.-Wang-publication-pic-2.png 325w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a> Dr. Wang explained that it is likely due to the cultural difference that Americans are typical emotionally expressive while Asians tend to be reserved, and he believes this finding has important implications for international business, negotiation, politics, etc.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Wang is leading a research team to further examine the personality differences cross cultures and groups (e.g., genders, political views, high vs. low intelligence, etc.) by collecting massive Facebook data, with a goal of developing psychological tests that are invariant cross cultures for the purpose of international talent recruitment, such as multinational company human resource recruitment management and international student admission.<\/p>\n<p>Matthew Lapalme is currently a third year Ph.D. student and he conducted this research under Dr. Wang&#8217;s supervision in the Computational Psychology Laboratory. Matthew is interested in applied psychometrics and emotional intelligence.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Wang is an assistant professor of Industrial\/Organizational Psychology at UCF. He\u00a0completed\u00a0his B.S. in psychology at\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/english.bnu.edu.cn\/\">Beijing Normal University <\/a>and one year post-baccalaureate at the University of Florida before finishing his Ph.D. in psychology at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
