Saturday, Dec. 5, COS student Lauren Gandy was honored as the Outstanding Four-Year College Student by the Orlando Section of the American Chemical Society<\/a>. The award was presented to\u00a0Gandy at the Orlando Section of the American Chemical Society\u00a0Annual Banquet held at the Blue Herron Restaurant, Titusville, FL. The award consists of a plaque and a modest monetary award.<\/p>\n

Gandy\u00a0is majoring in Forensic Science on the Biochemistry Track and conducts independent research with\u00a0Candice Bridge, Ph.D<\/a>.<\/span>\u00a0She is also majoring in French Honors and will complete Honors in the Major through research directed by Charlotte-Anne Trinquet, Ph.D.<\/a><\/p>\n

In addition to her outstanding achievement in scholarship,\u00a0Gandy is the president of the UCF Forensic Science Association<\/a> and vice president of\u00a0the UCF Sudent Chapter of\u00a0American Chemical Society<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Bridge and Stephen M. Kuebler, Ph.D.<\/a>, nominated\u00a0Gandy for this prestigious\u00a0award. In their nominations, they mentioned Gandy’s dynamic and productive personality, as well as\u00a0her outstanding work as a scholar. The professors\u00a0highlighted how she tirelessly\u00a0serves UCF and\u00a0the community through extensive education outreach and community service.<\/p>\n

“It was a great honor to be nominated by Dr. Kuebler and Dr. Bridge…I feel very lucky to have such great mentors who encourage me to strive for great things and push myself to go beyond what is expected.” said Gandy.<\/p>\n

“The greatest opportunities have availed themselves to me because of the support of Drs. Kuebler and Bridge, and I hope that I can live up to their expectations and make them proud.”<\/p>\n

The award recognizes undergraduate students, within\u00a0the\u00a0Brevard,\u00a0Lake,\u00a0Orange,\u00a0Osceola, Seminole,\u00a0Sumter,\u00a0or Volusia counties, who performed outstandingly that year in their chemistry courses, research, and extracurricular activities.<\/p>\n

At the event, Karin Chumbimuni-Torres<\/a>, Ph.D.<\/a>, was also honored for Outstanding Four-Year College Teacher. Samantha Mensah<\/a>, also\u00a0attended to support Torres, and represent UCF\u00a0at the event.<\/p>\n

The American Chemical Society is the leading international professional organization of chemists and chemical engineers. The Orlando Section of ACS serves a seven country area and selects one student per year\u00a0for Outstanding Four-Year College Student from among nominations submitted by its members.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
