Dubbed <a href=\"http:\/\/floridahighwaymen.com\/viewgallery.php3?gallery_id=142\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Florida Highwaymen<\/a>, these\u00a0artists navigated the Jim Crow south, often finding alternatives to traditional art galleries by traveling along the Florida\u00a0highways selling their landscape paintings from the trunks of their cars.<\/p>\n<p>For most, their art freed them from work in citrus groves and labor camps, and they created a body of work that has become not only a timeless collection of a natural environment, but a symbol of determination and belief in oneself. The surviving Highwaymen, now in their sixties and seventies, are an important chapter in America\u2019s culture and history. Their self-determination in the face of adversity remains an important story of perseverance, inspiration, and creativity.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_14874\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.floridahighwaymen.com\/viewitem.php3?item_id=381&amp;gallery_id=50\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-14874\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14874\" class=\"wp-image-14874 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2016\/01\/Mary-Ann-Carroll-81-Florida-highwaymen-300x213.jpg\" alt=\"Mary Ann Carroll 81 - Florida highwaymen\" width=\"300\" height=\"213\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2016\/01\/Mary-Ann-Carroll-81-Florida-highwaymen-300x213.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2016\/01\/Mary-Ann-Carroll-81-Florida-highwaymen-299x213.jpg 299w, https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2016\/01\/Mary-Ann-Carroll-81-Florida-highwaymen.jpg 346w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-14874\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Mary Ann Carroll-81<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Dr. Anthony\u00a0wrote her dissertation, as well as two empirical articles, based on the stories, lives, and travels of this group and their collectors. &#8220;My mentor pulled up a website and it had a description for a documentary on the Highwaymen.&#8221; Dr. Anthony said.\u00a0&#8220;I was immediately pulled in, and after more than two years of participant observation, content analyses, and 16 interviews (and 8 follow-ups) with promoters, collectors, and 13 of the 18 living artists, I was putting together my dissertation.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>There are plans in place to create a film\u00a0about these traveling artists.\u00a0The film\u00a0will be titled\u00a0&#8220;The Unknowns &#8211; Talent is Color Blind&#8221;,\u00a0and it will\u00a0depict the\u00a0story of the self-taught landscape artists who piloted a new age of art during the racially turbulent 1950s and &#8217;60s. Dr. Anthony states that, ironically, one of her empirical articles &#8220;critically analyzes the construction of their story through a theoretical lens titled color-blind racism.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It is such an uplifting story, and each and everyone of the Highwaymen has such a great and strong individual personality, their own backgrounds, their own interests, and their own unique talents.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_14873\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.floridahighwaymen.com\/viewitem.php3?item_id=337&amp;gallery_id=50\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-14873\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14873\" class=\"wp-image-14873 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2016\/01\/Al-Black-2001-24-florida-highwaymen-300x209.jpg\" alt=\"Al Black 2001-24 - florida highwaymen\" width=\"300\" height=\"209\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2016\/01\/Al-Black-2001-24-florida-highwaymen-300x209.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2016\/01\/Al-Black-2001-24-florida-highwaymen-299x209.jpg 299w, https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2016\/01\/Al-Black-2001-24-florida-highwaymen.jpg 348w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-14873\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Al Black 2001-24<\/p><\/div>\n<p>I was grateful for the opportunity to meet and speak with them, because you get a sense of that and it differentiates them, instead of the common popularized story that tends to group everyone together.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Anthony is an Assistant Professor in the\u00a0department of sociology.\u00a0Her\u00a0primary areas of research\u00a0interest include social inequalities, culture and consumption, identities, and social psychology. She also studies controlling images &#8211; stereotypes disseminated through popular media and influence our own actions.\u00a0Dr. Anthony\u00a0hopes &#8220;the movie is successful, but I also hope that it doesn&#8217;t place these artists &#8211; people &#8211; into such stereotypes.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Her teaching interests include theory, sex and gender, pop culture, and race and ethnicity.
