On Feb. 9\u201312, a\u00a0group of UCF faculty, staff, and graduate students from the Marine Turtle Research Group (MTRG)<\/a> attended the 3rd Southeast Regional Sea Turtle Meeting<\/a>, hosted by the\u00a0Southeast Regional Sea Turtle Network<\/a>\u00a0in Mobile, Alabama. Two UCF\u00a0faculty members and one research associate\u00a0gave oral presentations,\u00a0and\u00a0one Ph.D. student presented a poster.<\/p>\n

The theme of this years\u00a0meeting was Changing Attitudes: Meeting the Challenges of Sea Turtle Conservation<\/em>. The program featured special sessions, including one on the Deepwater Horizon oil blowout,\u00a0as well as\u00a0workshops\u00a0on different sea turtle topics.<\/p>\n

Professor Emeritus and Pegasus Professor Llewellyn (“Doc”) Ehrhart, Ph.D.<\/a>, was one of the\u00a0many\u00a0speakers throughout the event. He talked about the\u00a0“Continued exponential growth in Florida\u00a0green turtle nest production: Another record-breaking year at the Archie Carr NWR.” His research was co-authored by Marine Turtle Research Group staff, William (Bill) Redfoot, Dean Bagley, and Assistant Professor\u00a0Kate Mansfield, Ph.D.<\/a><\/p>\n

Dean Bagley, Research Associate, also presented at the event. Her presentation\u00a0focused on “Satellite tracking adult male green turtles throughout the\u00a0nesting season at the Archie Carr NWR and beyond.” Dr. Ehrhart\u00a0and Dr. Mansfield\u00a0co-authored her research. Assistant Research Scientist Erin Seney, Ph.D.,<\/a> spoke about the “Diet of Virginia\u2019s Kemp\u2019s Ridley sea turtles\u00a0over three decades”\u00a0for her presentation.<\/p>\n

Dean Bagley is the vice president of the Southeast Regional Sea Turtle Network and was also the program co-chair. She co-chaired a special session on region-wide research, while Dr. Seney co-chaired the Foraging and Developmental Habitats session.\"UCFMTRGPastAndPresent_SERSTM3_FromRyan\"<\/p>\n

Katrina Phillips,UCF Ph.D. student, presented a poster at the meeting. Her poster topic was “Good news or bad news? A shift in nesting female size among\u00a0loggerheads (Caretta caretta<\/em>) in the Archie Carr National Wildlife Refuge.” Dr. Mansfield co-authored and assisted Katrina with her research.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
