These <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nsf.gov\/funding\/pgm_summ.jsp?pims_id=5517\" target=\"_blank\">Research Experiences for Undergraduates <\/a>(REU) support active research participation of\u00a0 students in any of the areas of research funded by the National Science Foundation.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-16820 \" src=\"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2016\/04\/Michelle-Gaynor-Bio-REU-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"Michelle Gaynor - Bio REU\" width=\"134\" height=\"178\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2016\/04\/Michelle-Gaynor-Bio-REU-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2016\/04\/Michelle-Gaynor-Bio-REU-299x399.jpg 299w, https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2016\/04\/Michelle-Gaynor-Bio-REU.jpg 720w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 134px) 100vw, 134px\" \/>Michelle Gaynor &#8211; <em>Junior, Biology<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Michelle was awarded one of two REU positions in the <a href=\"http:\/\/julienneng.weebly.com\/reu-summer-2016.html\">Smith Lab<\/a> at the University of Colorado-Boulder, under the guidance of\u00a0J<a href=\"http:\/\/www.colorado.edu\/ebio\/julienne-ng\">ulliene Ng, Ph.D.,\u00a0<\/a>and<a href=\"http:\/\/www.colorado.edu\/smithlab\/people\/rob-laport\">\u00a0Robert Laport, Ph.D<\/a>. &#8220;I\u00a0will be identifying the factors influencing ecological and historical processes underlying plant community across the United States using a phylogenetic frameworks.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0program begins May 22 and ends on July 31. Directly after the REU program ends\u00a0Michelle will\u00a0be presenting her summer research with the Smith Lab\u00a0at the Botany 2016 conference in Savannah, Georgia.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-16922 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2016\/04\/Emily-G-RESIZED-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"Emily G -RESIZED\" width=\"138\" height=\"184\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2016\/04\/Emily-G-RESIZED-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2016\/04\/Emily-G-RESIZED.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 138px) 100vw, 138px\" \/>Emily Gipson &#8211; <em>Junior, <\/em><em>Biology<\/em>\/minor: <em>Chemistry<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Emily will\u00a0be working in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.unf.edu\/bio\/N00813595\/\">Eric Johnson&#8217;s, Ph.D.,\u00a0<\/a>lab at the University of North Florida as part of their coastal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unf.edu\/coas\/biology\/coastal_biology\/REU.aspx\">biology flagship REU program<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;ll be choosing between 2 research topics: Reproductive ecology of lionfish or population dynamics of blue crab.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The program runs from May 23 to July 29.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: black;font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-17054 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2016\/04\/melindapaduani_headshot-RESIZED.jpg\" alt=\"melindapaduani_headshot RESIZED\" width=\"144\" height=\"194\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Melinda Paduani &#8211; <em>Junior, <\/em><em>Biology<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Melinda was accepted to the <a href=\"http:\/\/harvardforest.fas.harvard.edu\/\">Harvard Forest <\/a>summer internship in ecology at Harvard University&#8217;s &#8220;outdoor research classroom&#8221; at Harvard Forest, in\u00a0Massachusetts. She will be working with mentors, <a href=\"http:\/\/harvardforest.fas.harvard.edu\/researchers\/59\">David Orwig, Ph.D.,<\/a>\u00a0and <a href=\"http:\/\/harvardforest.fas.harvard.edu\/researchers\/13862\">Neil Pederson, Ph.D.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I will be conducting dendroecological field work that includes overstory and understory tree coring, cross-dating, and some research on the invasive Woody Hemlock Adelgid beetle\u00a0in the\u00a0Hemlock forests\u00a0of Massachusetts and the nearby New England area.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The program runs from May 23 until August 5.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-16884 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2016\/04\/Heidi-W-256x300.jpg\" alt=\"Heidi W\" width=\"160\" height=\"187\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2016\/04\/Heidi-W-256x300.jpg 256w, https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2016\/04\/Heidi-W-299x350.jpg 299w, https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2016\/04\/Heidi-W.jpg 337w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 160px) 100vw, 160px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Heidi Waite &#8211; <em>Junior, Biology<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Heidi\u00a0will be conducting research at <a href=\"https:\/\/nicholas.duke.edu\/marinelab\">Duke University Marine Lab <\/a>in Beaufort, North Carolina. She will be working under the mentorship of <a href=\"https:\/\/biology.duke.edu\/people\/richard-b-forward\">Richard Forward, Ph.D.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I will be investigating the cirdcadiam rhythm in the larval release of a\u00a0subtital crab.
