This was the second year UCF PhysTEC hosted the workshop designed and implemented by LaMee, and thanks to funding by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nsf.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">NSF<\/a>, a number of participants were offered\u00a0stipends to attend as well as 12 hours of in-service credit.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThe PhysTEC workshop focused more on methods than programming,\u201d<\/em> said UCF physics alumnus and new Discovery High School physics teacher, Christopher Tiller, \u201915. <em>\u201cIt was very relevant for me since I\u2019m just starting out. I got a lot of information on how to approach an experiment and how to approach ideas.\u201d <\/em><\/p>\n<p>The final three days of the workshop involved Project CODER,\u00a0a programming and particle physics workshop initiated by\u00a0Adam LaMee, and University of Florida particle physicist and researcher, Sergei Gleyzer. LaMee and Gleyzer, who studied at FSU together, collaborated on the inception of Project CODER.<\/p>\n<p>Project CODER is a CMS OpenData workshop that provides a first of its kind opportunity for teachers and students to be trained to use CERN OpenData.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/home.cern\/about\" target=\"_blank\">CERN<\/a>\u00a0(Conseil Europ\u00e9en pour la Recherche Nucl\u00e9aire)\u00a0is\u00a0an international laboratory of particle physics\u00a0research located in Europe. Home to the <a href=\"http:\/\/home.cern\/topics\/large-hadron-collider\" target=\"_blank\">Large Hadron Collider (LHC),<\/a> CERN\u00a0uses particle detectors\u00a0such as Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS), to record collision properties, aiding in the study of laws of the universe. These data are free and accessible to the public for analyzing, education outreach,\u00a0and potential discoveries.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_17674\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-17674\" class=\"wp-image-17674 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2016\/06\/PhysicsWorkshop2-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"PhysicsWorkshop2\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2016\/06\/PhysicsWorkshop2-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2016\/06\/PhysicsWorkshop2-299x199.jpg 299w, https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2016\/06\/PhysicsWorkshop2.jpg 375w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-17674\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Participants such as high school physics teacher, Stan Cutler, work on their virtual notebooks in the CMS OpenData workshop.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><em>\u201cA unique angle about this workshop is that it&#8217;s bringing particle physics to our students and teachers in a way they weren\u2019t able to consider,\u201d<\/em> explained LaMee. <em>\u201cThere\u2019s this big push for programming and coding in schools and the question is, \u2018How do we make that happen?\u2019 So,\u00a0the teachers\u00a0here are\u00a0startin<\/em><em>g to figure out what that might look like in their classes.\u201d <\/em><\/p>\n<p>For the next three days,\u00a0participants\u00a0learned about new programming technology, interpreted histograms, and adapted\u00a0CMS OpenData to classroom activities\u00a0and standards\u00a0using research-based practices. Stipends were\u00a0offered once again to a number of participants along with 18 hours of in-service credit.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cIt\u2019s wonderful,&#8221; <\/em>said Gleyzer.\u00a0<em>&#8220;The idea\u00a0is to get young people excited and to analyze the data which are available to them for free. Participants were taking the notebooks we created and modifying them to analyze the data themselves. That was really nice to see.\u00a0\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Educators\u00a0like Lake Brantley High School physics and science teacher, Stan Cutler, found that these kinds of workshops allowed for insightful discussion from teachers alike. <em>\u201cThere were some share sessions earlier in the week where we passed along some of the things that individual teachers do for their classroom\u2014some of those that I will definitely use.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>LaMee and Gleyzer will lead the Project CODER workshop at the University of Florida from August 1- 3.<\/p>\n<p><em>To learn more about CERN and Project CODER, <a href=\"http:\/\/home.cern\/\" target=\"_blank\">click here<\/a>.
