{"id":17704,"date":"2016-07-07T10:17:27","date_gmt":"2016-07-07T14:17:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.cos.ucf.edu\/?p=17704"},"modified":"2016-07-07T10:17:27","modified_gmt":"2016-07-07T14:17:27","slug":"a-wild-summer-for-biology-research-team","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/a-wild-summer-for-biology-research-team\/","title":{"rendered":"A Wild Summer for Biology Research Team"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_17851\" style=\"width: 235px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-17851\" class=\"wp-image-17851 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2016\/06\/Alicia-Huber-Patrick-B-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"Alicia Huber &amp; Patrick B\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-17851\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Alicia Huber (left) in the field working with her adviser, Dr. Patrick Bohlen (right).<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">Alicia Huber, graduate student in the <a href=\"https:\/\/biology.cos.ucf.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\">UCF Biology Department<\/a>, has been working with a team of UCF students this summer at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nature.org\/ourinitiatives\/regions\/northamerica\/unitedstates\/florida\/placesweprotect\/the-disney-wilderness-preserve.xml\" target=\"_blank\">Disney Wilderness Preserve<\/a> to investigate its soil&#8217;s carbon storage.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u00a0<\/em><em>\u201cIt is well known that wetland ecosystems generally function as carbon sinks\u2014their soils especially often store significant amounts of carbon,\u201d<\/em> explained Huber. <em>\u201cAlthough we know that carbon storage varies among wetlands, little is still known about specific drivers of variation.\u201d <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-17852 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2016\/06\/Alicia-2-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Alicia 2\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2016\/06\/Alicia-2-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2016\/06\/Alicia-2-299x224.jpg 299w, https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2016\/06\/Alicia-2.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Huber, a student in the Urban Ecology Lab, is working under the guidance\u00a0of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.green.ucf.edu\/people\/bohlen-patrick\/\" target=\"_blank\">Patrick Bohlen, Ph.D.<\/a>, director of UCF Arboretum &amp; Landscape and Natural Resources.<\/p>\n<p>Her field work at the Disney Wilderness Preserve is research conducted for her master\u2019s thesis project titled, \u201cHydrologic Regime and Soil Carbon Storage in Restored Subtropical Wetlands.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Wetland ecosystems\u00a0store a disproportionately large amount of carbon for their coverage compared to other ecosystems.\u00a0Huber&#8217;s study\u00a0looks at hydrology&#8217;s relationship to soil carbon storage in wetlands in hopes of creating a model that could be used to inform future decisions about wetland management.<\/p>\n<p>The study&#8217;s site is the Disney Wilderness Preserve located near Kissimmee, FL, which was once a working cattle ranch. The site was purchased by the Walt Disney Corporation in the 1990&#8217;s as part of mitigation agreements to restore the upland and wetland habitats as well as monitor endangered plants and wildlife.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cBecause of the scope of this restoration project, there are decades of hydrologic data available for the site,\u201d<\/em> said Huber. <em>\u201cThis does not exist at other sites. Without this available water elevation data throughout Disney\u00a0Wilderness\u00a0Preserve, my study would not be possible.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/arboretum.ucf.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\">UCF Arboretum<\/a> Leadership and Program Facilitator, <a href=\"https:\/\/arboretum.ucf.edu\/people\/guziejka-john\/\" target=\"_blank\">John Guziejka<\/a>, as well as\u00a0undergraduate students Gina<em>\u00a0<\/em>Barrella, Shelby\u00a0Turner, and Paul Boudreau\u00a0have<em>\u00a0<\/em>been heavily involved in the field collection with Huber this summer.
