Dr. Bridge hoped that this event not only informs them\u00a0on the innovative instrument, but also continued the development of NCFS&#8217;s strong ties with the local forensic science community.<\/p>\n<p>DART can rapidly analyze a variety of samples, including narcotics, fingerprint residues, explosives, inks, and lubricants, which NCFS has primarily centered its\u00a0degradation and microbial research on. Nine years since its inception, the instrument&#8217;s implementation is still relatively new to the forensic science field.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2016\/08\/DART-machine-up-close.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-18407\" src=\"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2016\/08\/DART-machine-up-close-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"DART machine up close\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2016\/08\/DART-machine-up-close-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2016\/08\/DART-machine-up-close-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2016\/08\/DART-machine-up-close-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2016\/08\/DART-machine-up-close-299x199.jpg 299w, https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2016\/08\/DART-machine-up-close.jpg 1500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThis instrument has gained significant interest in the forensic community, primarily in the drug community,\u201d<\/em> explained Dr. Bridge. <em>\u201c[Analysts] don\u2019t have to do colorimetric tests or do any\u00a0sample preparation, which could take anywhere from 10-30 minutes.\u00a0Then to analyze the sample on an\u00a0instrument\u00a0could add another\u00a030 minutes to the process. DART-MS cuts down all of that time from about an hour to five seconds, at least.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The DART Day event consisted of lectures from guest speakers, presentations of research conducted by Dr. Bridge and her students, as well as hands on demos that demonstrated the user friendliness of the instrument.<\/p>\n<p>Among the most prominent speakers were DART-MS inventor, Robert \u201cChip\u201d Cody, Ph.D., and National Institute of Standards and Technology\u2019s Research Chemist Edward Sisco, Ph.D., who discussed the instrumentation, potential modifications of DART and how adaptable it is to a laboratory.<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;The purpose of DART day was to demonstrate to the local forensic science community how DART could be implemented into the crime lab,&#8221; said Dr. Bridge.\u00a0 &#8220;We are hoping that we can do enough validation and research that it can be its own stand-alone analysis, comparable to a GCMS (gas chromatography and mass spectrometry).\u00a0 At this point is a really great screening tool and we want to share it with the [forensic science] community and to show that we are a good resource for them to use.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>To view more photos from the event, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/UCFSciences\/photos\/?tab=album&amp;album_id=829337897165719\">click here<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Forensic scientists, scholars and students gathered at UCF\u2019s National Center for Forensic Science (NCFS) for &#8216;DART Day&#8217; on Friday, August 5.
