The Prince Mohammad Bin Fahd Program for Strategic Research and Studies<\/a> and the Middle Eastern Studies Program is hosting an event entitled Stuck in Traffic: An Insider\u2019s View of the Failed Turkish Coup<\/em>, on September 20, 2016 from 3:15 p.m. -4:15 p.m. at the new Global UCF Building, room 101A & 101B, featuring Hakan \u00d6zo\u011flu, Ph.D.<\/p>\n

The most recent attempted coup in Turkey took place on the night of July 15, 2016, where over 300 people were killed, 6,000 arrested, including civilians as well as prominent military leaders and judges. Dr. \u00d6zo\u011flu, co-chair of the Middle Eastern Studies Program at UCF, will share his experience and insight being present in Turkey during this historically significant event.<\/p>\n

Dr. \u00d6zo\u011flu’s previous research focuses on Kurdish Nationalism in the Ottoman Empire. His book was titled\u00a0Kurdish Notables and the Ottoman State. The Turkish edition of the book came out in 2004. \u00d6zo\u011flu’s main aim in this project was to understand the process of identity formation and emergence of nationalism.<\/p>\n

The Prince Mohammad Bin Fahd Program for Strategic Research and Studies, which is supported by the Prince Mohammad Bin Fahd University Annual Fund, was established in 2012. The program is administered by the Department of Political Science in the College of Sciences at the University of Central Florida (UCF). The program sponsors or co-sponsors public presentations by distinguished scholars and practitioners, an annual forum, student fellowships and research activities.<\/p>\n

The Middle Eastern Studies Program at UCF is designed to foster teaching, research and scholarship of the Middle East and Muslim world in particular. The program has a strong focus on the religious, political, historical and social forces shaping the region. The program offers an\u00a0interdisciplinary minor<\/a>\u00a0that provides students an overview of Middle Eastern civilization and a detailed study of its most important features.<\/p>\n
