{"id":20686,"date":"2017-01-25T10:52:19","date_gmt":"2017-01-25T15:52:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sciencescosmaincms.cm.ucf.edu\/news\/?p=20686"},"modified":"2017-01-25T10:52:19","modified_gmt":"2017-01-25T15:52:19","slug":"physics-graduate-students-conference-bound","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/physics-graduate-students-conference-bound\/","title":{"rendered":"Physics Graduate Students Conference Bound"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_20687\" style=\"width: 449px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-20687\" class=\"wp-image-20687\" src=\"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2017\/01\/IMG_6740-1024x683.jpg\" width=\"439\" height=\"293\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-20687\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">UCF physics graduate students Brian Zamarripa Roman and Fernand Eliud Torres-Davila<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Brian Zamarripa Roman and Fernand Eliud Torres-Davila, University of Central Florida <a href=\"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/physics\/\" target=\"_blank\">physics<\/a> graduate students, were awarded a travel grant from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aps.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">American Physical Society <\/a>(APS) to attend the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.apsbridgeprogram.org\/conferences\/2017\/\" target=\"_blank\">APS Graduate Education and Bridge Program Conference<\/a> in College Park, Maryland.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs part of the bridge program, we hope to expand our knowledge of the cutting-edge fields of research in physics,\u201d said Torres-Davila.<\/p>\n<p>The award recognizes graduate students such as Zamarripa Roman and Torres-Davila who have made noteworthy progress in their academic careers.<\/p>\n<p>Zamarripa Roman and Torres-Davila want to be more than just bystanders at the conference. With his current project focusing on methods of interpreting attitudinal assessments in physics, Zamarripa Roman hopes to share his knowledge on the matter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe will be presenting findings on situational factors that affect or not affect introductory students\u2019 attitudes toward physics,\u201d Zamarripa Roman said.<\/p>\n<p>Torres-Davila, who plans on graduating with his doctoral degree in 2020, is currently conducting research related to improving well-known nanoscale imaging systems. He also hopes to share his research at the conference.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have submitted an abstract of my research,\u201d he said. \u201cI hope to show my findings at the conference and get possible feedback for it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For the deserving students, the conference is more than just a gathering about physics, it\u2019s an opportunity for them to connect to like-minded individuals that share the same passion.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s always great to see what your colleagues across the country are working hard in,\u201d said Torres-Davila<\/p>\n<p>Zamarripa added \u201cas bridge program students we find ourselves managing our identity as physicists and underrepresented minorities who are at risk of not proceeding with graduation.
