University of Central Florida Pegasus Professor in the Department of Physics<\/a> Talat Rahman<\/a>, Ph.D., has been named a Fellow of the American Vacuum Society<\/a> (AVS). Fellowship is the premier membership recognition for this professional Society and recognizes AVS members who have made sustained and outstanding scientific and technical contributions in areas of interest to AVS.<\/p>\n

Rahman was selected based on \u201ctheoretical and computational contributions to understanding governing properties (chemical, optical, magnetic, vibrational) of nanoscale materials, to foster rational design of functional materials for various applications, in a bottomup approach.\u201d<\/p>\n

AVS is an interdisciplinary, professional society that supports networking among academic, industrial, government, and consulting professionals involved in a variety of disciplines. Common interests among these professionals are related to the basic science, technology development, and commercialization of materials, interfaces, and processing area.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are very proud of Dr. Rahman\u2019s achievement,\u201d said Eduardo Mucciolo<\/a>, Ph.D., chair of the UCF Department of Physics. \u201cNo more than 0.5% members can be appointed fellows every year and the nomination criteria are very stringent. She is an international leader in surface science and the AVS fellowship is a well-deserved recognition of her status in this field.\u201d<\/p>\n

The competitive nomination process required Rahman to provide a list of lifetime publications and invited talks. Four well established colleagues in the field also needed to submit letters of nomination supporting and highlighting her contributions to the fields of interest to AVS. The selection was then made by the AVS Awards Committee.<\/p>\n

Rahman is thankful for the prestigious honor and her colleagues who helped her achieve it.<\/p>\n

\u201cI feel privileged that my colleagues in AVS have selected me for this honor,\u201d she said. \u201cWhile I am very delighted to join the select group of AVS Fellows, it would not have been possible without the hard work of my students, postdocs and other co-workers, for which I am very grateful.”<\/p>\n
