{"id":2367,"date":"2012-03-14T22:27:54","date_gmt":"2012-03-14T22:27:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.cos.ucf.edu\/?p=2367"},"modified":"2012-03-14T22:27:54","modified_gmt":"2012-03-14T22:27:54","slug":"physics-research-published","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/physics-research-published\/","title":{"rendered":"Physics research published"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Sergey Stolbov and Marisol Alc\u00e1ntara Ortigoza, from the University of Central Florida, have published their study on the new efficient electrocatalysts in a recent issue of <em>The Journal of Physical Chemistry Letters.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Currently, most hydrogen fuel cells use catalysts made of platinum, a rare and expensive material. Finding an alternative to platinum is challenging because few materials can withstand exposure to the fuel cells\u2019 highly acidic solvents, which dissolve most transition metals. Only four elements \u2013 platinum, iridium, gold, and palladium \u2013 can resist corrosion, but none is ideal.
