Over the weekend of Oct. 19-21,\u00a0the Florida Council for the Social Studies, an organization that represents the field of social studies education in Florida, held its annual conference and awards dinner.\u00a0The Lou Frey Institute<\/a>, part of the Political Science Department<\/a> within the College of Sciences<\/a>, sponsored Dr. Tina Heafner of UNC-Charlotte, a\u00a0leading scholar on social studies and civic education,\u00a0as the keynote speaker. Her speech, \u201cIs Social Studies Education a Constitutional Right?\u201d was well-received and aligned well with the civic education, advocacy, and research mission of the Institute.<\/p>\n

During the awards dinner, fellows and staff from the\u00a0Institute’s Florida Joint Center for Citizenship<\/a>\u00a0demonstrated why the Institute, the College of Sciences, and the University of Central Florida\u00a0continue to grow in reputation and influence. The following winners of professional organizational awards were announced:<\/p>\n

The Agnes Crabtree International Relations Award<\/em>
\nDr. Scott Waring\u00a0of UCF’s College of Community Innovation and Education and a Fellow of the Florida Joint Center for Citizenship at the Lou Frey Institute<\/em>\u00a0\u00a0<\/em>

\nMr. Christopher Spinale, FJCC Action Civics Coordinator<\/strong><\/p>\n

Dr. B.J. Allen Social Science Professional Award<\/em>
