An early cut of the film won the Grand Jury Prize, Award at the Orlando Urban Film Festival last year.<\/p>\n<p>But perhaps his most important contribution since arriving at UCF in 1995 has been the impact he\u2019s had on Hollywood. Some of his students have graduated and now are actors, producers, directors and talent agents in the film and theatre industry. One even has her own popular YouTube show shot in Australia.<\/p>\n<p>The secret to his success?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHelp them learn to think and to network,\u201d Major says from his office in the\u00a0<a class=\"external\" href=\"https:\/\/communication.ucf.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nicholson School of Communication and Media<\/a>. \u201cNothing is given in this business. You have to look for opportunities and hustle. It works. We\u2019ve got several UCF graduates living their dream because they are smart and they work hard.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>They include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Production assistants who have worked on\u00a0<em>Grey\u2019s Anatomy<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>Modern Family<\/em><\/li>\n<li>A talent agent<\/li>\n<li>TV producers and feature film directors<\/li>\n<li>Actors who have worked on Broadway and off-Broadway, in movies and in commercials<\/li>\n<li>A reality TV star in Australia<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It takes talent, passion, hard work and help, Major says. He knows first-hand how important it is to network and have someone mentor you in order to succeed.<\/p>\n<p>Through the years he worked with and met people such as Harry Belafonte, Dolly Parton, Robert De Niro, Francis Ford Coppola, Bob Mulligan, Alan J. Pakula and James Earl Jones on a variety of projects from the stage to the big screen. Each individual taught him something and most helped him connect with the right folks for the next step in his career.<\/p>\n<p>To help his students make those connections, he helps arrange invitations to the Director\u2019s Guild of America Awards for pending graduates and recent alumni.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-24242 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2019\/02\/Major2_90413956_Small-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2019\/02\/Major2_90413956_Small-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2019\/02\/Major2_90413956_Small-768x513.jpg 768w, https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2019\/02\/Major2_90413956_Small-299x200.jpg 299w, https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2019\/02\/Major2_90413956_Small.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>Earlier this month,\u00a0<strong>Hailey Winslow \u201908<\/strong>,\u00a0<a class=\"external\" href=\"http:\/\/link%20to%20https\/\/www.ucf.edu\/degree\/radio-television-ba\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a radio-television alumna<\/a>, met Major and several other UCF alumni at the awards.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHere we were with some of Hollywood\u2019s top people and there\u2019s a table of UCF students,\u201d Winslow says. \u201cWe spent a couple of hours after the awards with (director and screenwriter) Peter Farrelly. That\u2019s just amazing and that\u2019s because of Professor Major.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Winslow, now an actress, had one acting class with Major, but he has become a lifelong mentor and friend.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cProfessor Major has taught me life skills that I use every day,\u201d she says. \u201cI hear his voice in my head all the time. I\u2019m so grateful to him. He\u2019s not just a professor. He goes ways beyond that. UCF students are so lucky to be able to learn from him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Winslow stars alongside her Goldendoodle, Sadie,\u00a0in\u00a0<em>Outback &amp; Under<\/em>, a 12-episode adventure travel show that explores Australia. They wrangle crocodiles, dive with sharks, cuddle venomous snakes and meet a lot of crazy characters along their journey through the land Down Under.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Benjamin Michel \u201911<\/strong>, a filmmaker and producer based in San Francisco, also calls Major instrumental in his career.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe gave me real world advice that helped me be a better film director and overall artist,\u201d Michel says. \u201cAnd his wisdom has really been a gift.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Michel took Major\u2019s Black Cinema class in 2009 and would often talk about his goals. Since arriving in California he\u2019s filming or making documentaries about the experiences of African-Americans, Latinos and the homeless. Several of those documentaries have aired on KQED, an award-winning public television station in San Francisco.<\/p>\n<p>UCF\u00a0<a class=\"external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/degree\/theatre-bfa\/acting\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">theatre<\/a>\u00a0grad\u00a0<strong>Lisa Chu \u201901<\/strong>\u00a0also credits Major with much of her success. She\u2019s an assistant director in Hollywood and has worked on a range of television and feature films including\u00a0<em>The Big Bang Theory<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Westworld<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>The<\/em>\u00a0<em>Last Samurai<\/em>\u00a0starring Tom Cruise.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe started me on my career path to become a Directors Guild of America (DGA) Assistant Director,\u201d Chu says. She met him while a freshman in a general education theater class. \u00a0\u201cI\u2019ve been a DGA AD for over 15 years and counting. I would not be who I am without Anthony Major. My life has been\u00a0blessed with him as a dedicated inspiring educator, a colleague and a truly great friend. He is simply amazing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Major\u2019s personal contributions to the local arts scene have not gone unnoticed either. The Black History Committee of Orange County honored Major with its 2010\u00a0Excellence in Education Award. The high school he attended, The Booker Performing Arts High School in Sarasota, renamed its rehearsal hall in his honor. He also served as the program director for the Zora Neale Hurston Institute for Documentary Studies for several years.<\/p>\n<p>Central Floridians may also recognize him from his work as director of \u201cA Vote, A Voice,\u201d produced for Florida Sen. Geraldine Thompson. Or perhaps from his teaching, acting and directing in the UCF Conservatory Theatre and his work with Seminole State College Theatre.<\/p>\n<p>His favorite projects are those that tell an American story from an underrepresented community\u2019s point of view. It gives those communities a voice, he said.
