The number of applicants varies but can have up to a couple of hundred depending on the discipline. Researchers at universities, nonprofit research groups and government agencies are eligible, and winners receive a minimum of $500,000 for five years. UCF faculty have received 57 CAREER awards since 1999.<\/p>\n<p>This year\u2019s awardees are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Zhongzhou Chen<\/strong>,\u00a0<a class=\"external\" href=\"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">College of Sciences<\/a><br \/>\n<em>Research area:<\/em>\u00a0Physics; building an online learning for mastery system that creates a student-centered STEM-learning environment<\/li>\n<li><strong>Madhab Neupane<\/strong>, College of Sciences<br \/>\n<em>Research area:<\/em>\u00a0Physics; the electronic and spin properties of new quantum materials<\/li>\n<li><strong>Laurene Tetard<\/strong>, College of Sciences,\u00a0NanoScience Technology Center<br \/>\n<em>Research area:\u00a0<\/em>Physics; using polarized infrared light to enhance atomic force microscopy to study molecular structures of living systems at the nanoscale<\/li>\n<li><strong>Tania Roy<\/strong>,\u00a0<a class=\"external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cecs.ucf.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">College of Engineering and Computer Science<\/a>,\u00a0<a class=\"external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nanoscience.ucf.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">NanoScience Techology Center<\/a><br \/>\n<em>Research area:<\/em>\u00a0artificial neurons and synapses for accelerated machine learning<\/li>\n<li><strong>Pamela Wisniewski<\/strong>, College of Engineering and Computer Science<br \/>\n<em>Research area:<\/em>\u00a0Computer Science; investigating the mechanisms by which a critical gap in adolescent online safety technologies can be closed by leveraging interaction design as a means to minimize online risks<\/li>\n<li><strong>Xiaoming Yu<\/strong>,\u00a0<a class=\"external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.creol.ucf.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">College of Optics and Photonics<\/a>,\u00a0Center for Research and Education in Optics and Lasers<br \/>\n<em>Research area:<\/em>\u00a0ultrafast lasers for advanced manufacturing<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>BY ZENAIDA GONZALEZ KOTALA College of Sciences faculty represented half of the six grants awarded in the\u00a0National Science Foundation Faculty Early Career Development&#8217;s\u00a0\u00a0highly competitive CAREER program.
