Poster boards detailing projects as varied as fish prosthetics and bouncing marbles were on display in the hospital\u2019s lobby, each awaiting the arrival of a special panel of guest judges.<\/p>\n<p>Thursday\u2019s event was put on by <a href=\"https:\/\/today.ucf.edu\/nemours-ucf-transform-education-hospitalized-children\/\">UCF PedsAcademy at Nemours<\/a>, which provides highly specialized schooling to chronically ill children in a way that\u2019s tailored to their specific disease. \u00a0STEM Day wrapped up the first academic year of PedsAcademy, which launched in August 2018. The program is run by about 50 UCF faculty members, student researchers, postdoctoral scholars and student interns who specialize in mathematics, engineering, science, the humanities and special education. Megan Nickels, Ph.D., an assistant professor of STEM education, heads the program.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery school needs a science fair,\u201d Nickels says. \u201cWe wanted to give the kids center stage so everyone can see their good work.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_24733\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-24733\" class=\"wp-image-24733 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2019\/05\/Seymour-I-1-of-1-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2019\/05\/Seymour-I-1-of-1-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2019\/05\/Seymour-I-1-of-1-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2019\/05\/Seymour-I-1-of-1-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2019\/05\/Seymour-I-1-of-1-299x199.jpg 299w, https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2019\/05\/Seymour-I-1-of-1.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-24733\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Katie Seymour, wife of Interim President Thad Seymour, was a science fair judge.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The lobby of the Lake Nona hospital also hosted labs from across the university, enticing children with opportunities to touch sea turtle shells, get up close with bugs and learn how muscles generate electricity.<\/p>\n<p>August Terry, 10, was captivated by the crabs brought by the Coastal and Estuarine Ecology Lab. She completed three projects for the science fair: one on silicone in paint; another with a 3D-printed replica of the Castillo De San Marcos fort in St. Augustine; and a third exploring the best materials for building bridges.<\/p>\n<p>Terry, who is still undergoing treatment for bone cancer, won an award for \u201cmost likely to change the world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Terry\u2019s St. Augustine project was particularly special to her, as she was unable to attend her fourth-grade field trip to St. Augustine because of her illness.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can\u2019t put a price on it,\u201d says her mother, Wendy. \u201cPedsAcademy has made hospital visits something August actually looks forward to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One of the judges was Katie Seymour, wife of Interim President Thad Seymour.
