The Office of Global Perspectives and International Initiatives will host longtime human rights defender Laura Olson. During her visit to UCF on Feb. 6, Olson will deliver a special luncheon presentation, “Human Rights in 2020<\/a>.” She will also appear on WUCF’s “Global Perspectives” television show, meet with faculty and record a student podcast.<\/p>\n

Laura Olson directs the Human Rights Program at The Carter Center. Her career includes service to the Office for Civil Rights and Civil Liberties within the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, the U.S. Department of State’s Special Envoy for Guant\u00e1namo Closure and the International Committee of the Red Cross. She is an expert in international humanitarian and human rights law, international criminal law and transitional justice.<\/p>\n

UCF Diplomacy Program Director Ambassador Harriet Elam-Thomas, who is moderating Olson’s luncheon event, noted, “This lunch is an incredible opportunity for students and organizations to learn from Olson’s experience and connect with The Carter Center, one of the most effective advocates of human rights we see today.” The Carter Center, located in Atlanta, is committed to human rights and the alleviation of human suffering. The Center seeks to prevent and resolve conflicts, enhance freedom and democracy and improve health.<\/p>\n
