{"id":26184,"date":"2020-03-23T09:10:49","date_gmt":"2020-03-23T13:10:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sciencescosmaincms.cm.ucf.edu\/news\/?p=26184"},"modified":"2025-07-23T12:41:46","modified_gmt":"2025-07-23T16:41:46","slug":"ucf-masters-programs-in-emergency-management-nonprofit-management-rank-among-top-5-in-the-nation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/news\/ucf-masters-programs-in-emergency-management-nonprofit-management-rank-among-top-5-in-the-nation\/","title":{"rendered":"UCF Master\u2019s Programs in Emergency Management, Nonprofit Management Rank Among Top 5 in the Nation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>U.S. News &amp; World Report<\/em> today ranked 27 UCF graduate programs in the top 100 of their fields nationally, according to the publication\u2019s 2021 Best Graduate Schools rankings<em>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Seven of the programs are taught in the College of Community Innovation and Education, including UCF\u2019s highest-ranking program, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/degree\/emergency-and-crisis-management-mecm\/\">Emergency and Crisis Management<\/a>, which was ranked No. 2 in the nation and jumped five spots from last year\u2019s No. 7 ranking.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEmergency and Crisis Management is dynamic and requires an all-hazards, whole community approach,\u201d says Claire Connolly Knox, director of the program. \u201cIn Florida, we tend to focus on hurricanes. The current pandemic, COVID-19, and recent cybersecurity\u00a0attacks on local governments are two of the many hazards our community needs to prepare for, respond to, recover from, and mitigate.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs technology evolves, the risks we face continue to evolve and change drastically. Our degree offerings provide\u00a0a solid foundation for current and future leaders to face the more common crises and disasters as well as those we have yet to experience.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>A Broad Appeal to Community Impact<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The other programs ranked among the top 50 include <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/degree-search\/graduate-program\/search\/nonprofit%20management\/\">Nonprofit Management<\/a>\u00a0(No. 5),\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/degree-search\/graduate-program\/search\/optics\/\">Optics and Photonics<\/a>\u00a0(No. 12),\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/degree-search\/graduate-program\/search\/counselor%20education\/\">Counselor Education<\/a>\u00a0(No. 13), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/college\/community-innovation-education\/\">Local Government Management<\/a> (No. 17), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/degree\/public-administration-mpa\/\">Public Management and Leadership<\/a> (No. 23),\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/degree-search\/graduate-program\/search\/criminal%20justice\/\">Criminal Justice<\/a>\u00a0(No. 26),\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/degree\/public-administration-mpa\/\">Public Budgeting and Finance<\/a>\u00a0(No. 26),\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/college\/community-innovation-education\/\">Best Public Administration Schools <\/a>(No. 38), Industrial\/Manufacturing\/Systems Engineering (No. 41) and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/degree-search\/graduate-program\/search\/Health%20Administration\/\">Health Administration<\/a> (No. 46). The Best Public Administration Schools also made the highest leap from last year\u2019s rankings, jumping 15 spots from No. 53.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe programs offered by the School of Public Administration are dynamic in the sense that they move in rhythm with the governments, public, communities that influence all of our lives,\u201d says Pamela \u201cSissi\u201d Carroll, dean of the College of Community Innovation and Education, which has the most ranked programs this year. \u201cThe faculty are experts in their academic areas, and are also leaders who bring students into conversation with local, state, national and international leaders. Through these experiences, our students see the potential for positive societal impact of knowledge and well-informed public action.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The dean says today\u2019s students seek professions in which they can directly contribute to society, and at UCF they are able to take advantage of educational offerings that include fully online, hybrid and face-to-face courses, plus the new location of UCF Downtown, where students increasingly are drawn to new opportunities to experience the intersections of classroom and organization-based learning.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur programs attract students that have an interest in serving the public good and making the world a better place for all,\u201d says Naim Kapucu, director of the School of Public Administration. \u201cStudents are able to obtain an education that emphasizes the value of innovation and partnership for public service. Our programs attract students who are interested in being driving forces for the changes they wish to see in society.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kapucu says the school has the largest faculty expertise in emergency management compared to any public administration programs in the nation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMatched with our experienced faculty, an innovative approach to education, and strong community partnerships, students graduate with the skillset and knowledge to be not only public servants, but also leaders in our ever-evolving world,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Strong Programs in Engineering<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>UCF\u2019s engineering programs dominate the additional programs in the top 100 in their fields, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/degree-search\/graduate-program\/search\/Aerospace%20Engineering\/\">Aerospace Engineering<\/a> (No. 53), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/degree-search\/graduate-program\/search\/materials%20science\/\">Materials Science and Engineering<\/a> (No. 54), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/degree-search\/graduate-program\/search\/communication%20sciences\/\">Communication Sciences and Disorders<\/a> (No. 55), Physical Therapy (No. 57), Electrical\/Electronic\/Communications Engineering (No. 58), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/degree-search\/graduate-program\/search\/computer%20engineering\/\">Computer Engineering<\/a> (No. 61), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/degree-search\/graduate-program\/search\/physics\/\">Physics<\/a> (No. 61), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/college\/community-innovation-education\/\">Best Education Schools<\/a> (No. 63), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/degree-search\/graduate-program\/search\/environmental%20engineering\/\">Environmental Engineering<\/a> (No. 68), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/degree-search\/graduate-program\/search\/mechanical%20engineering\/\">Mechanical Engineering<\/a> (No. 70), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/degree-search\/graduate-program\/search\/social%20work\/\">Social Work<\/a> (No. 70), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/college\/engineering-computer-science\/\">Best Engineering Schools<\/a> (No. 74), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/degree-search\/graduate-program\/search\/civil%20engineering\/\">Civil Engineering<\/a> (No. 75), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/degree-search\/graduate-program\/search\/computer%20science\/\">Computer Science<\/a> (No. 82), Best Medical Schools: Research (No. 84) and Best Medical Schools: Primary Care (No. 94\u2013122).<\/p>\n<p>The rankings are drafted each year to help students find programs to continue their education and advance their careers.
