He\u2019s joined by Ashley Santana, who is majoring in biomedical sciences and biotechnology.<\/p>\n<p>Hoppenworth plans to use the scholarship to continue pursuing his studies in theoretical computer science. A Burnett Honors College student, Hoppenworth\u2019s research interests include string algorithms and data structures. He has conducted both theoretical research with the UCF string algorithm lab, as well as experimental research with the Air Force Research Laboratory Directorate. He plans on pursuing research at a national laboratory after completing his Ph.D. in computer science.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis scholarship will give me the opportunity to continue pursuing research in a field that is fast-paced and always changing,\u201d said Hoppenworth. \u201cI also know it will give me an edge on graduate applications, so I am feeling pretty grateful considering how competitive it is.\u201d\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Hoppenworth will receive up to $7500 to support his future academic endeavors and any relevant research opportunities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am very grateful to the professors and graduate students who pushed me to apply for this,\u201d said Hoppenworth. \u201cIf it wasn\u2019t for their recommendation, I wouldn\u2019t be receiving this award.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A double major in computer science and mathematics recently landed one of the most prestigious undergraduate scholarships in the U.S. Only five endorsements per university are allowed for the Goldwater Scholarship, and Gary Hoppenworth was one of those recipients.
