{"id":26764,"date":"2020-06-15T08:21:22","date_gmt":"2020-06-15T12:21:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sciencescosmaincms.cm.ucf.edu\/news\/?p=26764"},"modified":"2020-06-15T08:21:22","modified_gmt":"2020-06-15T12:21:22","slug":"hydrophobic-polymers-focus-of-dura-award-winner-research","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/hydrophobic-polymers-focus-of-dura-award-winner-research\/","title":{"rendered":"Hydrophobic Polymers Focus of DURA Award Winner Research"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-26766 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2020\/06\/Ezat_WhiteCoat-e1592223336457-241x300.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"241\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2020\/06\/Ezat_WhiteCoat-e1592223336457-241x300.jpeg 241w, https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2020\/06\/Ezat_WhiteCoat-e1592223336457-299x372.jpeg 299w, https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2020\/06\/Ezat_WhiteCoat-e1592223336457.jpeg 753w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 241px) 100vw, 241px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>A recent UCF College of Engineering graduate, Ezat El-Said \u201920, earned the Distinguished Undergraduate Research Award for his work in self-healing polymers with biomedical applications.<\/p>\n<p>The polymers under study are hydrophobic and self-healing, with a dynamic variety of applications ranging from artificial skin grafts to metal coatings. \u00a0El-Said has been conducting his research in the laboratory of the Department of Chemistry\u2019s Gang Chen, Ph.D, since fall of his sophomore year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI remember I read about these polymers and I was just fascinated,\u201d said El-Said. \u201cI aimed to use what I was learning about them and their incredible adhesive properties as the key to solving not just a medical puzzle, but puzzles in applications such as civil engineering.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As El-Said looks forward to continuing his education at UCF\u2019s College of Medicine, he is sure that research will always be a part of his career as a future doctor of medicine.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs early as I can remember I\u2019d take things apart and put them back together,\u201d said El-Said. \u201cThese polymers were just the beginning.
